well it sounds like ya pound the crap out of it regularly, it might be one of three things, bad injector, bad TPS sensor or a ignition control module going bad. as to juniors comment, yes it can have a code to lead you to the problem, but remember one code can be caused by another item being faulty and it won't show it's self till the first item is changed.

usually an inspection involves brakes, lights, tires, etc. a mechanic can't see inside a transmission and cannot predict when it might go out. get a copy of the inspection report and see if the transmission was checked. the only thing you can check on a transmission is the fluid level and color ( it should be pink) and if it shifts ok on a test drive. personally i would sue the dealership, what kind of a warranty did you get?

Q:This morning I was driving my girlfriend to work and the check engine light came on. Took it to the auto parts store to get it scanned and it gave me a code of P0440 Evaporative Emissions System. I texted ChaCha and asked them how to fix the problem. They answered back and said Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back. This should fix the problem. To me it seems like that fix wouldn‘t work but I was wondering if that‘s true? If not, how do I fix the problem?Btw, I have a 1996 Pontiac Sunfire SE 2.2L

Yes in my state they check emmissions every 2 years yes the gas cap can do this buy a new one.

Q:My check engine light is on and i got it check at Auto Zone. It came up as an emission vapor problem. I replaced the gas cap.( reset the computer) It came back on. The motor is running fine and there have been no other problems. I search all the hoses for cracks and leaks and cannot find one. Any idea what I should do next before I take it to a garage?

Very likely a stuck evap vent valve, but only a diagnosis can verify that, unless you want to gamble on my educated guess alone. That is the most common evap system failure and the part is relatively inexpensive and simple to replace (it's at or near the evap canister).
