- Q: i have a metal (aluminum) door - very thin sheet on each side and then it has a styrofoam like insulation in the inside. well, the people who lived her before cut a hole in it about 6 inches high 4-5 inches wide... my guess is for a pet of some kind. anyway, when i moved in it was covered with tape and filled with wall insulation. i want to fix it it doesnt have to be perfect by any means- its not even an exit door i use i just want it to stop letting cold and hot air in and out....my idea was something involving that spray can insulation.... but if i have tape on the one side while spraying that in im afraid itll leak..... any suggestions?

- It usually has screws. If there is no piece on the inside that prys off, exposing screws from the frame into the wall, then there may be screws through a flange under the trim. You need to take the trim off anyway, so take it off and look. If there are no exposed screws, the wall covering (typically sheetrock) may be covering them, cut the sheetrock back a little, but not beyond what the trim covers. As long as you can see metal heading into the wall ,there is a point of attachment someplace under there. If you are not trying to salvage the frame, just get a sawzall and some good metal cutting blades and cut between the wall and the frame.

- The metal door frame is heavy gauge steel. There are 2 ways to do this. #1. Purchase a 1/4-20 tap and a # 7 high speed steel drill bit. Mark the location of your holes for the hasp on the steel door frame. Drill holes with the #7 bit. Run the 1/4-20 tap into the hole slowly and straight - back out the tap after every couple of turns to clean out the holes. Keep running the tap in and out until you are all the way through the steel. Now purchase some 1/4-20 hex head machine screws and install in the holes. #2. Purchase some self drilling screws hex head ( these screws have a drill point on the end of them). You do not need to pre-drill holes for these screws. Simply run them in the hasp holes. Use like a #8 or #10 self drill screw with a hex head probably 3/16 or 1/4 hex head. This is the easiest of the two methods.

Floor will need patched where wall bottom plate was. Basemold re-fitted to re-install up to new door trim.
