- Is this for a nuclear power station? If 2500 Te and 60m really are the specified loads and span then it is likely that it will be used very seldom. In theory you can design for any load to be lifted but maintenance on a crane system that is used once a year (10 years?) is a real problem. The main items to consider are: Availability of winches and bogies which then dictates running beam and rail sizes. For the spanning beam several alternative sizes needed to be designed and then costed. It will be not just weight but transport costs that determine the most efficient sizes The overall height of the crane will then determine the required roof height assuming that the crane is under cover. For comparison the Harland and Wolf cranes in Belfast called Samson and Goliath can lift 840 Tonnes each. Overall design needs to consider speed of travel, acceleration and deceleration rates and a host of other things.

- There were 535 total in 2009--the population increased slightly last year but I have not seen a total for the population of 2010. Deaths can occur at any time so the number changes constantly. The Journey North site counts 281 adults in the wild western population and 106 birds in the reintroduced eastern flock. They did not give a number for the birds in captivity so I cannot give you a total. You can follow the reintroduced whooping crane population and their migration each spring and fall on the Journey North (in fall called Journey South site). They also track song birds and hummingbirds and monach butterflies.

- They first construct the top of crane on the ground with help from other mobile cranes. This includes the long horizontal part with the operator's cab, and the concrete counterweight. this is then placed on a climber, with which the crane kind of builds and climbs itself to the necessary height. Every vertical section of the crane is placed in the climber. When the piece is in place, the climber climbs to the top of piece from where the next vertical piece is placed and so on. - When you added the pan/tilt head (and the cable) to the camcorder, you exceeded the supported weight rating of the crane and the crane stage. Then, when you put 40 pounds of counter weights on, you went way over the engineered capacity of the crane arm resulting in the bend.
