- Q:I have a 9 week old kitten that while playing, she continues to bite or play with my electrical cords from my tv, computer, etc. I have zip tied all of my wires and carefully tucked them away, but when I am not around, she finds them and pulls them out and begins to play with them. She has even taken the plastic baby proof electrical socket covers out and continues to attack the sockets. When I have sen her playing with these things, I have tried to make loud noises and shout no or clap my hands, but all she does is look at me like I am stupid. I don't want her to get hurt, and I am trying to avoid having to buy new cords and cables. What can I do?
- Have you tried spraying her with a water bottle? The water bottle will make her run away from the cords to avoid getting wet. It takes a few times, but if you persist, she'll avoid the area where she always gets sprayed. Also, I have used double sided tape as a cat training tool many times. They hate the stickiness. My cats have always learned quickly to avoid anything I put that tape over. On the sockets for example, you could put in the baby protectors then place a piece of double sided tape over it. (be sure to fold a corner over so you can get it off again) Make sure she has plenty of other toys to play with. It sounds like she's a pretty smart little kitten. - Q:I have a water pump that is connected directly to the electrical panel in my home. I want to cut the wire, install two extension cord ends, and re-connect the wire. By doing this, I will be able to unplug the pump from the electrical panel and plug it into a generator when needed.My question is whether I need to pay attention to polarity when connecting the extension cord ends? If I get the wires reversed, will it cause a problem? I guess if I reverse the wires on both the male and female ends, it should work fine when connected to the electrical panel (because both the male and female are reversed, which should net to the same thing). I am concerned about when I plug the thing into a generator. If I accidentally switch the wires around the wrong way, what will happen?
- If you are planning on powering the house from the generator with the panel main breaker open (disconnected from the utility) the phasing will not make any difference on a single phase system. If there is a possibility that the generator will back feed an energized panel then phasing is critical. This second setup is called paralleling with the utility and requires specialized paralleling switch gear. If the system parallels with the utility while out of phase it will cause a massive current draw and result in extensive damage. I agree with the last post. Better call a local specialist for advice. Someone who can look at the system who has emergency power backup system experience. After rereading your post it looks like you want to disconnect the pump from the utility and provide power exclusively from the gen set. Under these circumstances the polarity of the phases will not make any difference in pump operation. A single phase 230 volt pump is not de-pendant on phasing. Make sure all grounds, fusing and method of disconnect are in place. Don't connect the pump before the gen reaches rated speed and voltage. Safety first
- Q:I am prepping it for a derby and accidentally cut the fuel pumps electrical wire harness thinking it was stereo or tail lights. I just want to hook it up to start it and move it to the shop where i can really tear into it. There are 4 wires. Black, purple, grey, and black w/ yellow stripe. I want to bypass the electrical connectors and just splice it into the wires that run along the drivers side floor. What color wire is what and what color do i splice it to?
- Easy way? The gray is the pump. Run it to a hot key wire or a toggle switch. Run the other two black wires to ground.

- Q:I want to install an electrical outlet on a wall that doesn't have any other outlets. There is a wall light directly above the place where I need the outlet so I want to use that junction for the power source. I do not want the wall light's switch to control the outlet. How do I wire this?
- Depends on how the light is wired. If it's got only a black and a white wire, the only thing you can do is have the switch control the whole circuit. With only two wires, the black wire is made/broken at the switch, so the only way to get a circuit is to have the switch on. If you have two black and two white, you're OK. One B/W pair will go to the switch and the other B/W pair provides the power. If you have this, notice that one pair is wired across the black of the other pair. That is, a black wire coming in ties to another wire going out without going to the light. The companion wire of the one going to the switch should be wired to the light. That's your switch leg, and it is made /broken at the switch. The white wire of the leg in should be on the other pole of the light. You want to take your new wire and add the black to the connection on the black coming in. You'll now have three wires there - hot in, hot out to switch, hot to your new outlet. Take your white from your new run, undo the white of the leg in at the light. Connect those two and add a white pigtail. Wire the pigtail to the light. Be sure all circuits are off, and if you're not sure which wire is which, use an ohmeter to test. Be sure all grounds are connected in each box. Check out what will be on the circuits and make sure you don't overload them, and also that your boxes are rated for the amperage/wires you'll be using.

- Try just shutting of the circuit breaker to that part of the house until you can afford to have this fixed. That is the safest solution.
