- Q:Okay here's the scoop. My wife recently talked me into purchasing a 8 by 10 $600 throw rug for our living room. She said it would look nice when guests come over and it does. The carpet has a lot of light colors in it as well as some dark and here is where the problem is... I want to roll up the carpet so it's against the wall when its just regular everyday traffic and roll it out only when we have guests. - Yes, you are being overprotective but its understandable. You don't want the rug to get spoiled and the best way to ensure that is to use it minimally. BUT. Its your home. And if you buy something to make your home look better, you're doing that so YOU can live in a better, prettier home :) the rug isn't there for your guests to appreciate it, it's there for you to appreciate it :) so maybe you should just leave it there and not roll it up and put it away'

- I understand completely! My cat seems to hate using scratching posts and much prefers to scratch the carpets. Although telling your cat off may help gradually. They do not learn like dogs and wont understand as well. I would recommend using a water spray or a citrus smelling product! As you probably know cats HATE being sprayed or splashed with water. So if you see your cat scratching the rug, just gently spray him. Keep the water nearby and after a few times he will learn!! Scratching=water! Or you could use a citrus (orange or lemon) smelling product. Citrus is very strong for cats and might not be obvious to humans so you wouldn't need to worry any smell. Try rubbing an orange flavored car freshener over the rug and that will prevent him scratching the rug, again they hate orange scented things. I hope these help and your cat stops scratching the rugs! :)

- Q:My mom has had a Karastan rug for 30 years now and it's in gorgeous condition and it has never once shed. It's also wool. - I would contact a high end rug store in your area (the kind that sells persian, antigue rugs etc) or even by emai or phonel:Larger cities have many (such as NY, Atlanta, LA). Generally, the rugs might need to be cleaned prior to storage as grime dirt help to break down the fibers. Then they must be rolled (never folded) and put into unbleached muslin bags for cleanliness. Cleaning must be done by someone especially trained to work on vintage, collectable rugs (again this info can be gotten at a fine rug store).

- Any spray adhesive should work, look in the local craft store. For a more finished appearance, rugs and wall hangings should be bound. You can use either a sew on binding or an iron on. To finish without binding, cut canvas at least 3 holes beyond the outside edge of the design, fold to back of rug , match mesh and baste in place. To finish with binding, cut canvas at least 3 holes beyond the outside edge of the design, then cut the corners diagonally about away from the pile. Then with right side facing you, sew one edge of the binding as close as possible the knotted edge. Turn so the back is facing you, then fold back and sew the other edge of the binding to the back of the rug Miter corners and stitch down Finishing a wall hanging: Start at upper corner, sew on binding around both sides and bottom of the rug Then with right side facing you, sew one edge of the binding as close as possible the knotted edge of the top of the rug, turn over so the back is facing you, then sew down making sure you will have enough room to insert a rod or piece of dowel through. Alternatively you can just bind the rug in the normal manner, then to hang, sew on large wooden curtain rings, slide over a wooden rod, add wooden finials to the ends of the rod and hang. As for cleaning, my best advice is take it to a reputable cleaner, tell them what it is made from (type of yarn, etc), and ask if they can clean it with no damage. If you want to try washing it at home, use a good rug upholstery cleaner diluted with water in a bucket, then clean the rug by working a foam with a sponge, then using the foam gently rub into the material. Then dry by gently rubbing with terry cloth (towel). I would test a piece of yarn to make sure it's colorfast, first.
