Q:I need a means of driving a 3 horsepower induction motor re-purposed as an induction generator which would coincide with specific cost-effective parameters. I ran the numbers in an excel spreadsheet and realized that the amount of gasoline or diesel required to run an engine appropriate for a 3 horsepower generator consumes more fuel per hour than is economical when the electricity is sold back on the grid. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks: You are up against economy of scale. The power company produces millions of kW-hours, so they can sell it to you much cheaper than you can possibly generate it. And with a lot less pollution. Your only chance is to use solar cells or a wind turbine, but even there, the payoff period for the capital expense is 20 years or more, unless you have very favorable conditions. And the equipment used to synchronize with the power line and generate your power must be approved by the power company. I doubt they would approve your home made generator. In fact even with approval, it takes an expert to get it working correctly.

To try to point you in the right direction. First, you need to know the torque of this magnet. 1 horse power 0.74569 kilowatts So to get a 1 kilowatts, you need 1.35962 horsepower. The motor will have a certain efficiency. I do not know if this is factored in to the motors power rating, however if the efficiency is, say, 90%. Then you will need to divide the horse power by 0.9 to get the correct horse power rating. Is this a motor part of a diesel / fuel generator, or is it part of a wind turbine / water turbine?

Is solar a good source of energy to power such a factory?: Yes, it can be fully solar. Very power comsuming factories are autonomous. You'll notice that race cars from the 60's and earlier had skinny tires because of the principle that the friction coefficient was not dependent on surface area but since then, race car tires have gotten wider and softer. At first the mechanism as to why wider tires worked better wasn't known but in the 80's they realized that it had to do with the structure of materials at a microscopic level. Basically the surfaces are not smooth at a microscopic scale and hence are not in continuous contact though pressure increases the percentage of the surfaces that actually interact more so than the overall cross sectional surface area hence the independence on surface area was actually an illusion and could be greatly affected by the type of material involved hence soft tires designed to adhere, actually bonding to the road surface. Physics is a lot like statistics, unless you consider every possible consideration and there's likely an infinite number of considerations, the conclusions drawn are not necessarily conclusive. Hub motors actually increase the rotational and unsprung mass considerably creating handling problems and additional energy loss due to the suspension. There's already diesel serial hybrid buses that use hub motors but at those scale, the additional rotational and unsprung mass is a much smaller percentage of the overall vehicle mass.

Q:i need a generator that can be continually run for years it needs to be able to easlly provide enough power for five one person cabinsi am going to use this to power a camp so it needs to withstand the outdoor elements i am looking for a brand name and an approximate costthank you to all who answer: what you need to do is run that generator with a quality diesel engine and you need to get some commercial companies to advise you the power, amps, and you will need to have some time off the line so your refrigeration will need to be of good quality to stay cold for 5/6 hours while people sleep --- or else you need to have an excellent muffler system for that power plant you probably need to figure how to have some farming so you get the farm discount on the fuel .
