'Automatic on' means a transfer switch generator control panel. If you're thinking about 'survival mode' diesel is your best fuel option. (More widely available, less tech. support for refueling, and stores well.) You might consider an engine heat capture system for efficiency in winter conditions. You probably need about 20-25KVA to handle full load with heating. (That's only a 'guestimate, DO do the math before you select a unit.) This won't be cheap.

Q:I read about it in an old Mother Earth news (1993?) The car was mainly powered by the gen. The batteries would only kick-in for hills, boost of power, etc. I am interested in this design, anyone know if it works well? Be sure the exhaust system doesn't leak into the room. Where is the intake coming from? Is there a separate duct for intake air or does the engine take air from the room. The exhaust pipe will be hot, and needs people protection. Exposed belts should have a guard so nothing can accidentally be caught or jammed into them. Is the cooling fan guarded or protected? Can the shut down switch/lever be quickly and easily operated. Is the fuel tank separate from the engine? Is there a fuel shutoff valve? Just some things to consider.

Q:i.e a house or a hospital.: Diesel or propane are good for long term use on small scale. You want a generator that runs at a low RPM to give a reasonable longevity between rebuilds. A diesel engine with a large storage fuel tank would be the best for small scale power generation. If you have a pipeline source for natural gas you can run a diesel engine on natural gas or propane. What makes a diesel the best choice is that it runs at about 1200 RPM and will run possibly for years without a snag other than oil and filter changes. A gasoline engine runs closer to 4000 or more RPM which causes far more wear and friction and isn't good for long term use. Gasoline is far cheaper and good for temporary generation like for normal power outages. Natural gas or propane generators, especially ran in a diesel style engine, burn very clean and can be cheaper if you have natural gas pipelines in your area, plus you wouldn't need a storage tank for fuel. Even a 10 KW generator could go through 20 gallons of diesel a day, so you would need at least a 500 gallon tank to last a month. Pipe line would eliminate this tank and truck delivery of fuels. If you are looking at off grid power, like solar or wind, it is best to combine the two. Solar heating is the cheapest way of heating water which could be used to heat a house and/or bath water. Wind is the cheapest for DC generation of electric which is stored in big banks of lead-acid batteries. Using LCD lights and low power equipment will minimize the amount of electricity you need to generate and store

Q:I'm a salesman for a welding supplies company, and a customer is interested in buying a diesel welder/generator for use in the paddock where he can't get electricity. While looking around I've come across a 200amp machine but it says it's a 200amp AC welder. it was my understanding that all welders are DC standard, and the AC current was only on welders to weld aluminum.: At 3000 RPM it would make 50 Hz. not 60 HZ power. My guess is that the speed regulation would not be good enough just because precise regulation costs more. It is rated for 75 Volts. It would probably be cheaper to buy a 10HP generator than try to adapt a welder.

Q:I really need to know to know this.@ two days old. my baby was subjected to a high level of diesel fumes coming in from the hospital vents. Due to testing of generators and backed up through vent. she was in the room roughly 30 minutes what kinda damage should I be concerned about. should I be concerned? how long would it stay in lungs and the blood? please if you know.thanks: It depends on the size of the room and how quickly diesel fumes are being added. The gas would not say long in the blood and lungs although the damage would still be evident to a doctor doing a thorough exam. The two greatest concerns for you would be brain damage due to a lack of oxygen. Essentially when you're breathing in any kinds of fumes you are depriving your brain of oxygen while also subjecting your body to whatever poisons are in the fumes themselves. The second area of concern would be lung damage. The tissues would suffer as some of the fumes you are talking about could have an acidic component and could burn the lungs to some degree. Have your baby examined by a doctor and tell him your concerns.
