Q:How are normally AC motors reversed?
I know you probably want a definitive answer, but this sums it up nicely! www.physclips.unsw.edu.au/jw/elec...
Q:I have a ton of good magnet wire i stripped off and old motor housing and wanted to build a new motor with it. I started small with wire wrapped around nails and 12 v battery and it worked but it got extremely hot very fast. If i plan to build a 120 volt ac motor then would i have to use some special electronic equipment? Since 12 volts made it burn up then 120 would be even worse unless i could dampen it.I AM NOT TRYING TO BUILD A PROFESSIONAL MOTOR. JUST SOMETHING THAT USES LIKE WIRE WRAPPED AROUND NAILS OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.
For wire wrapped around nails or something, use a lower voltage. Look at descriptions of how motors work and compare AC motors with DC motors. A permanent magnet AC motor might work better than an induction motor. Study all the kinds of AC motors. Single-phase AC motors usually need capacitors. If possible, wind the wire on something U shaped and put the rotor between the ends of the U.
Q:This american device is labeled as '60hz' but it runs on a universal brush motor, which means that it will still run fine in a '50hz' country without any frequency cycle disturbance, providing i convert the volts, right?I was told that bacause it's labeled on one stores website as '120V AC 60 Hz only' that it probably isnt a true universal motor. But I noticed You can get replacement Carbon Brush and Brush Spring Assemblies - This would futher indicate thats it's a 'true ' universal motor right?
A universal motor will run fine on 60 Hz or 50 Hz. Speed on a universal motor is determined by windings and load, not Hz. Universal ac motors operate with nearly equivalent performance on direct current or alternating current up to 60 Hz. Universal ac motors can operate on dc with essentially equivalent ac motor performance, but with poorer commutation and brush life than for an equivalent dc motor. See the link below for more information.
Q:AC motors are known as the workhorse of industry.
First but most important reason is - the AC motors are maintenance free because there is only one winding called armature. another reason is that in AC motor rotating steady parts are not touching each other so there is not any wear tear.
Q:Is it ok to leave the heater in the quot;on positionquot; even after I turn my car off? Will it cause any damage to the blower motor, if every time I turn on my car; the heater turns on automatically because it's in the quot;on positionquot;?
You do not have to turn anything off when you shut off your car unless it actually stays on. Things like the dome light, headlights and the 4 ways will run down your battery with the key off if left on but all other features of a car if left on will not harm your car even at the point of restart. The ignition switch automatically cuts off all these accessories to deliver full power to starting the car. The only thing that could suffer is the battery which can basically fail anytime after 3 years anyway. Stop living in the days of old.... We have NEW cars today.
Q:Can the motor be mounted safely in the middle of the rear axle? In other words, is it possible to get rid of the gears inside a car (transmission and differential) and put the power straight to the wheels? Wouldn't that minimize power losses and further increase torque?
There are electric car kits that allow for the attachment of an electric motor directly to the rear axle housing at the input shaft. You still retain the gear inside the rear axle though. But it does get rid of the drive shaft.
Q:abt the current and if you could explian to me in detail how its diffrent witn an ac motor
A DC motor is a very basic type of motor. It will use permanent magnets, an armature and a commutator ring to control its function. The armature is an electro-magnet that can be switched on and off. The commutator ring is the switching mechanism. As you know, unlike poles if two magnets attract each other and like poles repel. The commutator ring has electric (DC) power applied to it. It is connected (both mechanically and electrically) to the electromagnetic coils of the armature. The armature creates a magnetic field and is drawn toward the permanent magnets arranged around the outside circumference of the armature. Of course the opposite pole of the electromagnet is repelled by the opposite ends of the permanent magnets. Obviously, once the magnets react their point of greatest attraction, all motion will stop. Before the rotating armature reaches that point, the magnetic field induced in the electromagnets is reversed by switching the direction of the current flowing through the armature's coils.. That switching is accomplished at the commutator ring, which is mechanically attached to the armature. The cycle continues and you have a very basic motor. There is no speed control with this type of motor. Speed is usualy limited by load. With an AC motor the magnetic fields are reversed by the fact that the current is constantly reversing. There speed is controled by the frequency of the alternating current. There are many more type of both AC and DC motors. This is very basic. An extensive study of motor technology cannot be written in this format. It would fill volumes.
Q:if i have a ac battery pack connected to a motor then does the motor have to be AC or DC
The motor you hyperlink to is a specialized unit, probably with a capacity administration kit. The spec. sheet refers to 380 volts; doubling which will rather much easily fry some thing, and that i does not choose to be sitting on a 760 volt battery. i could advise you touch the utility experts at Yasamotors for a definitive answer.
Q:I have a large AC motor, and a small DC one. The DC motor generates electricity for a small light, and I was wondering if an AC motor could do the same. Oh, and by the way, for those of you that say motors can't generate electricity, I know from experience that a DC one in reverse can.
I think you may be asking for the following (1) Say you have a AC Sychrnous motor with dc excitation in rotor. I think in that case that should be possible (2) I am also aware that when an AC induction sq motor falls into a situation where load runs the motor ( say down hill belt conveyors ) in supersynchronous speed , than the induction motor starts pumping power to the system all the while taking the excitation from the power system. As I understand normally , in electro mechanical electric power generators, we have to provide for following two minimum items (a) Mechanical energy (to be converted to electrical enegry) that turns the shaft. (b) Excitation to arrange for the magnetic flux. Further addition : Sq cage or wound rotor shall behave in similar manner in above situation Still further addition:- With regard to your statement on experience about same machine in Motor Regime and Generator Regime, I think and if I am not wrong, is as below: If an machine is connected to an electrical system and functioning in steady state , than the electrical condition can be represented by (a) Terminal Voltage (b) Excitation Voltage ( or the back EMF) opposing the terminal voltage (c) and the Current due to the difference of voltage restricted by the internal impedance of the machine. (A)In Motor Regime the Terminal Voltage is more than the Excitation voltage (B)In Generator Regime the Excitation Voltage is more than the Terminal Voltage
Q:When an AC motor overheats badly, what is generally the first point or two that it will fail at? And what will be required to remedy the problem?(I see alot of carbonization of the coils in various places.)'m working on bringing an old single phase 120 V, 12 A motor back into operation but I'm a bit new to motor theory and many other things under the sun.I pulled the motor off the table saw it came from, cleaned it up, realigned the extremely misaligned rotor with the stator so it turns easily again BUT it still isn't working, it just sits there and hums it's terrible hum. So obviously the alignment is not the current cause of the motors inability to operate. Thanks for your help!
Partly shorted between some winding due to aging, especial after overheated. Redo the whole winding and drip it into high temperature Epoxy.
