Q:does a 3 phase ac electric motor used as a generator create 3 phase ac power?
Yes, it generates 3-phase power. To create the magnetic field that transfers energy from the rotating shaft to the stator coils, it needs either: 1. Permanent magnets (no excitation required, synchronous generator) 2. A dc exciter (think of it as using electromagnets in place of the permanent magnets) 3. 3-phase power applied to the output. When the prime mover spins the shaft faster than synchronous speed, the device acts as a generator. When the prime mover tries to slow below synchronous speed, the device acts as a motor. This is an induction generator. It can't work as a stand-alone generator. It has to connect to the grid or to a power source (such as another synchronous generator) that can provide reactive support. You can also use a 3-phase motor to convert 1-phase to 3-phase. You apply single phase to two of the output terminals. The trick is that you have to manually start the motor spinning, or use a timer to temporarily connect a capacitor. It will then come up to speed on its own. It will generate the missing phase. You can connect a three-phase load to the three terminals (with proper protection, of course). Look up static phase converter for more information.
Q:I know over spinning most AC motors will turn them into AC generators. Is the same true of shaded pole motors?
Yes. It will generate power back into the AC supply. Some induction motors can be coaxed into generating into a load with a capacitor attached but without an AC supply connected. However, that is not a very reliable or versatile set-up.
Q:Here is a hair dryer i was going to buy from argos but it says it has an AC motor which most of the others don't have, is this a good thing to get?http://www.argos .uk/static/Product/partNumber/4429890/c_1/1%7Ccategory_root%7CHealth+and+personal+care%7C10199659/c_2/2%7Ccat_10199659%7CHair+care%7C10199687/c_3/3%7Ccat_10199687%7CHair+dryers%7C10199692.htm
AC is alternating current, this means it runs on the power from your wall outlet. They all use ac motors, it's just such a standard thing most people wouldn't even mention it. It's like saying your car runs on a gas motor. True, but most of them do.
Q:I am working on a variable frequency drive for an ac motor what parts do i need?
Not enough information! If you have a drive and a motor you have all the parts you need. Hook it up and program the thing.
Q:what is the advantage of DC servo motor over the AC one for robotic application?
AC power can cause data signal interference. Data cables need to be shielded resulting in larger cable diameter, more weight and expense.
Q:I want to buy a 55 kw AC electric motor. Now 55 kw = about 75 hp.On ebay i see AC motors for sale that say .55 kw. Is this the same? If not how many horsepower is this?
A 55 kw motor is a major motor. Usually this motor is only seen in industrial applications because of the amount of electricity it takes to run this. Even all electric homes only are wired for 25 kw worth of capacity at best. You would need 3-phase wiring and a multiple transformer pole out at the street to run this big motor. If you are looking for this to be used in an electric vehicle, they supply the huge quantity of electricity with huge quantities of batteries. Batteries can deliver a large amount of amps for a rather short period. In electric cars they use a huge inverter to change the DC battery power to AC power for the motor. But they also design the AC motors in electric vehicles to be run by batteries and to have regenerative braking, so the motor is a different design than you will find in a normal industrial AC motor. Like the other guy said, .55 kw is only 3/4 hp , the kind of motor they use to run a drill press or band saw.
Q:In the old days they used a hewittic mercury-arc Rectifier, to convert electricity from ac to dc. I would love to know why they had to do this!
It can. See the link below.....
Q:What are 3 purposes of the split rings on the commutator? What is the difference between a DC and an AC motor? explain.
DC means direct current, AC means Alternating Current
Q:Why asynchronous motor AC excitation, rather than DC excitation?
Synchronous motor is also a kind of AC motor. Mainly used for generators, motors can also be used, generally used for larger power, speed does not require the adjustment of production machinery, such as large water pumps, air compressors and mine fans. In recent years, due to the development of permanent magnet materials and electronic technology, micro synchronous motor has been more and more widely used. One of the characteristics of synchronous motors is the steady running speed, N and stator current frequency f1 has a strict constant relationship, that is, n=60f1/p=n0 synchronous motor speed n and rotating magnetic field speed N0 the same. The name of "synchronization" comes from here. The stator of a synchronous motor goes without saying that the general rotor coil must be energized to keep it in sync with the stator. (the rotor of the micro synchronous motor can be made of permanent magnetic steel.)Asynchronous motor is different, the stator winding energized to generate rotating magnetic field, in the rotor to generate induction current, so that the motor rotation. Structure than synchronous motor simple
Q:I know its been asked before but I need advice on what kind of motor to use for making a rotisserie. I want to be able to add a potentiometer and have a speed of between 2 and 10 RPM. I was originally thinking of a washing machine motor but think that it may not have the power at lower speeds.I Would also like to do it with a direct drive instead of having loads of pulleys as featured on you tube, although i realize some gearing may be required. Thanks in advice people.
A washing machine motor would be much too powerful. You need the right set of gears or pulleys, motors move at thousands of RPMs. Potentiometers don't work well with AC motors, plus you would need a high power one. Assuming you want a 120 VAC drive, although around food and moisture, a low voltage DC motor would be a lot safer and easier to control. So pin down the voltage, AC versus DC and other specs. I suspect a small 12 VDC motor would be best. With the right gears, it doesn't need much power. edit: and 12 VDC motors are easily available as there are a handful in each auto. Window motors, windshield motors, wither would work.
