Aluminium foil acts as a total barrier to light and oxygen (which cause fats to oxidise or become rancid), odours and flavours, moistness, and germs, it is used broadly in food and pharmaceutical packaging. The purpose of aluminium is to make long-life packs (aseptic processing|aseptic packaging) for drinks and dairy goods, which allows storing without refrigeration. Aluminium foil containers and trays are used to bake pies and to pack takeaway meals, ready snacks and long life pet foods.
Aluminium foil is widely sold into the consumer market, often in rolls of 500 mm (20 in) width and several metres in length. It is used for wrapping food in order to preserve it, for example, when storing leftover food in a refrigerator (where it serves the additional purpose of preventing odour exchange), when taking sandwiches on a journey, or when selling some kinds of take-away or fast food. Tex-Mex restaurants in the United States, for example, typically provide take-away burritos wrapped in aluminium foil.
Aluminium foils thicker than 25 μm (1 mil) are impermeable to oxygen and water. Foils thinner than this become slightly permeable due to minute pinholes caused by the production process.
Aluminium foil has a shiny side and a matte side. The shiny side is produced when the aluminium is rolled during the final pass. It is difficult to produce rollers with a gap fine enough to cope with the foil gauge, therefore, for the final pass, two sheets are rolled at the same time, doubling the thickness of the gauge at entry to the rollers. When the sheets are later separated, the inside surface is dull, and the outside surface is shiny. This difference in the finish has led to the perception that favouring a side has an effect when cooking. While many believe that the different properties keep heat out when wrapped with the shiny finish facing out, and keep heat in with the shiny finish facing inwards, the actual difference is imperceptible without instrumentation. The reflectivity of bright aluminium foil is 88% while dull embossed foil is about 80%.

- Q: For chemistry I had to do a lab to prove the conservation of massI used vinegar and baking sodaFirst, I added the masses of each separately and then added them before I mixed themThen I measured the total mass again but after the reaction occurredThe mass of the first system was a half gram larger than the mass of the second.I did the same procedures on a second trial, but instead I used aluminum foil to cover the cups to prevent from gas coming outBut the mass of the system before the reaction occurred was still larger than the mass of the system after when it should have remained the same since the cups were coveredCan someone give me a possible explanation as to why the masses of the second trial were not the same when they should havePlease explain well and thank you:)
- Hi luckii,No you don't need oil,but your oven does seem a little high.I would turn it down to about 300 the foil should protect the potatoes until they are doneGive them about an hour then test them with a sharp knife to see if they are cooked in the middleI hope this helps, all the bestRab
- Q: question about Al .Aluminium reacts rapidly with oxygen in the airWhy then are aluminium saucepans and foil seemingly inert in kitchens?
- Unlike iron that produces soft rust that can be easily scraped off, aluminum oxidizes to for a tenacious protective film that inhibits further oxidationIf the film is scratched a new film quickly formsThe aluminum film renders the foil or saucepan nearly inert (although many avoid boiling acidic foods in aluminum pots and pans because of concerns about ingesting too much aluminum).
- Q: today i want to roast some chicken and veg in the ovenwhen making this is it better to roast on aluminium foil or to use baking paper on top of the foil and put the chicken on the baking paper ??
- You really need to give more informationAs a chef, I never want to put foil directly on meatBy sealing the meat/vegetable package, you will actually be steaming the mealAs this is the desired method for low, slow cooking, it also has to be removable to brown the chicken before serving or you will be serving a white birdSince you want to roast your chicken I would recommend the low and slow method of cooking chicken with baking paper and foil over the chicken and vegetables with your seasoningtop with baking paper and seal with foilDo not add waterBy adding water, your meat will become stringywhen the meat and vegetables are ready for the oven, place in a 300 degree oven until everything is cooked throughIt should take about 2 or 3 hours depending on the size of your chickenWhen it is cooked, remove the foil and paper, scoop out the vegetables to a plate and keep warm, drain pan drippings into a pot to make gravyIncrease the oven temperature to 400 degreesReturn the chicken to the oven, breast side up, to brown, while you thicken the pan drippings to make the gravyAdjust the seasonings as needed with salt and pepper, but nothing else should be needed Hope your dinner is amazing!
- Q: I am currently over the road with my husband (he has a flatbed trucking job) and my kitchen is suddenly very very limited!! I have a portable stove with a single burner, and I have a medium size panI cook simple meals like turkey hot dogs, turkey burgers, and homemade burritos, but that is all I can think of to cook for us [ I need some good and EASY ideas for some variety that will be relatively easy to clean afterward ( I don't have a sink, so I do alot of wiping to clean my pan ) please let me know if you have any thoughts ~
- Stir fry some meat and vegetablesChicken, garlic, onion, snow peas, carrots, mushrooms, etc etcAnything you wantMake a vegetable stew-potatoes, carrots, celery, parsnips, is my favourite comboA bit of onion or garlic is good tooPut a bit of butter in the pan, turn the heat on medium/low and start adding the cut-up veggiesAdd just enough water so it doesn't burn, put the lid onTurn the veggies over from time to time so they don't burnYou can add ham or any other already cooked meat at the end, just in time for it to get warmIt's also good with cheese grated over it at the endMake an omelette or frittataYou can stuff a lot of vegetables into one of those, and cheese or sliced meatHow about corned beef hash? Cook potatoes and onions together, add corned beef when those are done, cook long enough for it to get warmRemember that you don't really have to cook the whole meal at one timeThere is no reason why you can't boil some pasta, drain it, toss it in a bit of olive oil, and set it aside in a bowlThen make your sauce in your one pan and add the pasta at the end to warm it up before servingYou can jazz up a bottled sauce by frying a bit of garlic in olive oil, then adding the jarred sauce and cooking it brieflyTry Shepherd's PieBoil the potatoes, mash them and set asideBoil any other veg you want with itFry the ground beef and when it's done, put the other stuff on top and put the lid on, heat on very low, just to let it all warm up againIt's very easy to clean even the dirtiest pan in very little waterPut a bit of water in the dirty pan, set it over the stove to get warm, scrub all the gunk off with a brush, dump it out and finish cleaning with a damp paper towelYou can get all the cooking equipment you really need into one medium size plastic boxI do it when campingMakes all the difference to have the right equipment.

- Cellulose insulation is treated with boric powder which I know kills insectsI am not sure if it kills mice but I am sure they dont love it,
- Q: I'm making my first still to distill spirits and was wondering if it is alright to use an aluminum container, opposed to a steel container, as the boiler in the still. Could the aluminum produce any unexpected harmful side effects.
- Aluminum can be toxic in very high concentrations, but using aluminum as cookware (or still-ware) is very unlikely to cause toxicity. The only time aluminum may cause a problem is when cooking tomatoes or highly acidic foods in untreated aluminum cookware. Even then, the level of aluminum that gets cooked off into the food is negligible. It's better, however, to make sure that the cookware you are using in the still is food safe. Copper may be a better choice, but I'm sure that's more expensive. Hope this helps. You may want to check your local area to see if there's a home-brewing supply, or a beer-makers supply company and they may be more helpful about a good container to use for the boiler.
