- Q: Hello,I live in the St. Louis area of Missouri and during the summer, Crane Flies (I call them Mosquito Eaters) fly around all the time at night. I believe that it is normal for this type of bug to be nocturnal, but lately, I've seen them flying around, jumping around, and getting in the house DURING THE DAYTIME!! (AHH!!) :0 Is there any explanation for this? If so, is there anyway to reduce their population in and around my house? Thanks for reading.Ty
- Mosquito Eater... That's interesting lol. I grew up calling them candlestick bugs. In any case, crane fly populations can explode when they have plenty of resources and few predators in the larval stage. It's possible that there is a shortage in invertivores (animals which eat invertebrates, such as insects or crustaceans) that provide top-down population control in the aquatic environment from which your population came. These insects are harmless and provide food and energy to myriad other organisms in their food web. For that reason, I suggest that you just catch them and take them outside. We get huge ones around here (Western Kentucky, think 2.5-3 inches from head to tip of abdomen with a good 6 inch leg span haha), so I wouldn't suggest squishing them in the house on the wall or anything lol. If you're really bothered by them, I don't really have a non-messy solution. As a biologist, I kind of just ignore them. Also, these animals are attracted to light. Maybe turn off your porch lights, if you have any, and keep your doors closed?
- Q: My best friend is going to live in Japan for about a year soon, and I want to send him a birthday present while he's there. A lot of the places I've looked say it's common to make 1000 cranes for people as a wedding present, or in preparation for your own wedding so I'm not sure this is an appropriate gift -___- Also, I have no idea how I would ship them to him...
- A 1000 cranes set is a lovely thought would be a wonderful present. But you have one problem. How many boxes will it take to ship 1000 origami cranes to Japan? How much will it cost? Remember, airmail is very expensive, USPS doesn't do overseas surface mail anymore. Mailing parcels to Japan with DHL/UPS would cost you at least $80 for 20 pounds or less. You would do better to send your friend cash by wire transfer. Furthermore, since your friend will be in Japan for 12 months, I would guess his living quarters are not spacious. The average home is only 1000 sq feet in size. Apartments can be as tiny as 100 sq.ft. Where will he put 1000 cranes? He will have it for a few months before he has to pack to return home. What will he do then? Toss the cranes or ship them home? I believe he would prefer to have the wire transfer. Cost of living in Japan is high. Cash is going to be so appreciated even if 1000 cranes gift is a sweet sentimentality. Check the sites referenced for cost of shipping.
- Q: What's the difference between QTZ63 and qtz630, isn't it the same kind of tower crane?
- It's the same kind of tower crane, but it's only a unit of rated lifting torque. The former unit is 63 tons. M, the latter is 630 kn m. According to the latest national standard "tower crane", GB/T5031-2008 and QTZ63 are written correctly.
- Q: How do you jump a crane? I know you jack it up but how is that done?
- I have no idea what you mean by jump a crane? What type of crane? Truck mounted, overhead, pedestal?
- Q: Similarities in theme with Emily Dickinson and Stephen Crane?
- Mortality would be the big one
- Q: Who is the most gruesome Stefano DiMera or Alistar Crane?
- Stefano DiMera!
- Q: I watched a man climb one once and he wasn't secured. Crazy. How much do they get?If there are any operators on here, do you get scared when you climb up/down?
- Tower crane operators are actually one of the highest paid of crane operators. It takes many years of career progression and many skills upgrading courses to reach that level. Crane operators start out with the crane trucks operating on ground level. They earn about 2k to 3k a month at this stage. They then progress to low rise cranes and then finally to high rise cranes. All the high rise crane operators are specialists in their field with many years of working experience. They would earn perhaps 7k to 8k a month.
- Q: I have this assignment to find out how a climbing crane is able to move up the building as construction continues.
- They add extra stages from the bottom. A tower crane is erected from a boom assembly, first and second tower sections of different cross section, and a base in a sequence of steps in which the boom assembly is mounted on a hollow climbing section dimensioned to be received in each of the larger second tower sections and defining a cavity dimensioned to receive each of the first tower sections. One of the latter is secured on a base in upright position, and the upright section is received in the cavity of the climbing section which is then raised relative to the first section and enveloped by one of the second sections. The enveloping section is secured to the base and the raised climbing section for supporting the climbing section whereupon the first tower section may be released from the base, raised, and secured to the second tower section. The climbing section may then be raised relative to the first tower section to permit the installation of another second section, and the procedure repeated, until all second or larger tower sections are superimposed on each other, the one first section being ultimately attached to the topmost second section. When the climbing section is raised relative to the attached first section, another first section may be superimposed on the one first section and the procedure repeated until the slimmer portion of the tower is assembled from superimposed first sections. Ultimately, the boom assembly is attached to the topmost first tower section, and the climbing section may be removed or stored for further use on the wider, lower tower portion.
- Q: The fight sequence on the construction crane between 007 and villain Molakka was mezmorizing. But would the laws of gravity allow for it to happen in real life? I mean, acrobats perform similar stunts, but could the average super spy and villain?
- Is a fantastic movie fight scene realistic? You've already answered your own question, so why ask?
- Q: I have found crane fly larvae on my kitchen floor in the middle of the night. Were are they coming from? How do I get rid of them?
- probably not larva of crane fly...they live in the soil outside. Describe or post a pic what you have
