- Q: want to tile counter top with out using hardboard
- It can and will hold up on one condition w/o a backer board.The top must be 2 3/4 ply wood or nova ply( HDF) , not the single layer counter top with the false edge that makes it look like its 1 1/2 thick. Other wise you need a backer board so the tile meets tile codes( ATC and TCA guide lines) for a minimum substrate which is 1 1/4 A few special thing need to be done but it will work. - I will have to assume you are talking about vinyl tile?? I can't imagine laying carpet over ceramic tiles!!! If your old carpet was wall-to-wall, all you need to do is untangle the old carpet from the needle-like protrusions located next to each wall. You can then lay new wall-to-wall carpet over the old tiles and connect it to the protrusions just like the old carpet was. If you are opting for an area rug, you will need to remove the old tacked-down carpet holders around the perimeter and repair or replace the vinyl tiles that now have holes in them.
- Q: i have these ugly light blue ceramic tiles in my kitchen (as a backsplash)..they are fairly big squares ... and the owner before me tried to paint the grout between them because the paint (or whatever it was) is coming off so now the grout is gross dark grey coming through...anyways...i was wondering if anyone had some easy ideas to cover up the ceramic tiles.
- They have a thin piece of granite that can be installed over the top of an existing counter top, but those are designed primarily for resurfacing a regular laminate counter top. I'm not real sure it would work on a counter top that is ceramic tiles. You'd have nearly the same type of look you have now. I believe they stock these granite counter tops at some of the big box stores like Lowe's. To change the look to a regular laminate counter top, you'd likely be further ahead to have the old counter top removed and a new top installed like you want. Some contractors may be able to save the old counter top so you could sell it if it could be made to fit somewhere.

- This sounds kinda strange as tiles are normally made of ceramics, but if it is a vinly tile you can glue them back on with a vinly glue like Kwik grip. The area just needs to be dry before appling the glue and the glue must be applied on both the wall and tile. Let the glue become tacky ( normally takes around 5 minutes) then just stick it back on. You could use the shower about an hour later.
