- I've got the same things in the building I work in. There Hard wired smoke fire detectors. The red light tells you the system is active. The other smoke alarm on the ceiling is probably a backup in case the building looses power. NOTE: Carbon Monoxide is heavy.The detectors are usually located near the floor.
