- Sure you can build your own solar panels, people do it all the time, especially with the efficiency of PV technology accelerating. How much you spend on a system depends on how much work you are willing to do for yourself, and how much and how efficiently you consume power. You can go all the way from high-end prefab installs that will run about $50 grand to fill the energy needs for an average 3/2 suburban home. You can buy kits and install them yourself, that cuts your price down quite a lot. You can purchase the components and put together a system yourself really cheaply. You can save even more money if you buy stuff used. You could actually build solar photovoltaic panels yourself, but it is a serious pain in the behind, you will need to use copper sheets and some highschool chemistry and do a lot of experimenting, and even if you do it right you definitly won't be able to replicate the power output available in manufactured silicone photovoltaic cells. So I say don't even bother. To get an idea of what a PV system for your local area might put out, use the PV-WATTS calculator at the government Renewable Resource Data Center. To learn how to build home solar energy systems, there's a lot of good free information online.

- You can't really judge the watts for solar lighting the same way you could for dc lighting. This is because of several factors The lights that you showed ARE NOT high quality lights and furthermore; they are not a well-known brand. Also, I would be suspicious of any store that offers lights for less than half of what other stores do. They are dumping the merchandise, which means it could have been sitting around for a while. MAXSA Innovations makes good solar lamps, so does Solar Goes Green. As the other responder wrote, you are better off using dedicated solar spot lights or floodlights than trying to integrate a solar panel into regular solar lights. A 00 Watt solar panel is pretty strong, and you also would need a battery. Unless you know how to rig up the system with appropriate controllers to make sure too much energy doesn't get into the rechargeable battery (lithium ion or NiMH), you take a risk on having the whole system fry out.

I'm not sure that a single static panel on your roof would generate enough to make it viable. But contact some people in your area to see how theirs are working out. - If you're talking about photovoltaic panels, for making electricity, they're very expensive. Around here I think it runs around 2 bucks a watt of capacity, just for the panels. Then they have to be installed of course, which means an electrician has to be paid, and you need an inverter also. You can also spring for a bank of deep cycle batteries if you want to be able to store the electricity from the panels to use at night or on cloudy days, but that adds another very large expense. Now if electricity is very, very expensive where you are, you could maybe pay this off in a few years, but I doubt you could pay off 8000 pounds worth of this stuff in only a couple years. If you're talking about solar for water or air heating, well, that's another deal. But those kind of setups cost a lot less to put in, I can't see anyone paying that much for it.
