- Q: About how much would it cost to purchase and install solar panels for the average American house so that the house can be off the power grid and use the same amount of electricity as it normally does?
- My friend has a system with 6 Panels, I think about 6 large batteries (Like Golf Cart Battery), a 5 KW Generator. It also has all the electronic controllers and monitors. He has about $30,000-$35,000 in his system. It does pretty good except it will not support air conditioning or heat without running the generator which is expensive. He has some niehbors that have air conditiong, but they use a gas / ammonia cycle for that. Caution, even with these systems they must be very careful with power usage, or they must run generators. They are located in the Sonoran desert where the sun shines just about every day so it is the very best of conditions. Based on this, I would say a system that would match the average household usage would cost around $80,000 or more, and would need a huge roof or large open area facing south. Probably not practicle, but possible.
- Q: Any recommendations for companies? Any things to look out for?
- It depends upon how you look at things. If you are looking for a decent return on investment, or a business decision, it is probably very unwise. In most cases people would see a far better return in upgrading insulation in ceilings, walls, and windows to much better insulation than they currently have, followed by proper resizing heating and air conditioning to smaller unit size to fit their lesser need as a result of the insulation. The heat an air conditioning units should be the highest efficiency available. The return on the above can make a positive and economic investment in many cases. If you have done the above first, and have money to spend and do not care about the return on it, then you can play with solar or wind. However, typical cost of generation of solar and wind energy is about $0.22 / KWH and you can purchase from utility at about $0.0/ KWH including generation and distribution so this is not all that prudent.

- solar panels do not use generators, but i like your idea, very creative.though i don't see the practicality of this being used commercially, i think it would make a great solar promotional piece though! off-subject, it is time we stop looking at the upfront costs of things and start looking at what the long term costs are. most green-technology, although expensive at first, end up saving tons of resources and actually increase profits of businesses! studies show that people who work in a green building tend to be happier which benefits health, more excited to go to work due to the business's environmental ethics, are more productive because of natural lighting, and are more efficient because more work is getting done. green buildings can actually boost the efficiency of a business! thus saving tons of money and reducing tons of waste. Doesn't this just make sense to you?
