- Q: I am going to be starting college soon and I would like some input to these two engineering majors. I know I want to pick one of these but I dont know which. I love building things but I also love tinkering with computers and technology. I've read that ECE has a better job outlook as well as a better salary. I think I might like ME because of the hands on although i think alot of it is designing on computers.[. I know I have time to decide in college. Any Help/Opinions??
- In terms of jobs, opportunities, money they all are basically equal. The question is what type of problems do you like to solve. I went into Electrical because I aced those chapters in high school physics. Today I solved several problems. I had one phone conference. Help plan a project, work that was to be done, material needed, key people. I made several follow up phone calls to see where key equipment and what calculations were completed. I reviewed a arc flash study, spot checked by hand a few of the computer calculations. Programs a great, but garbage in garbage out. About a month ago I was out in the field, and my friend Chris had a problem. Chris may be a mechanical engineer, but he is a real motor head. Chris is an expert on rebuilding 50 year old electrical equipment like 15kv breakers. This breaker would not open, and it was stuck so you could not unplug it. Chris injected lubricant into the socket, and had the men rotate the coupling by hand so the lubricant (special lubricant that Chris had to specify and buy) would penetrate. The were then able to unplug the breaker for the first time in 30 years. Chris then had to figure out what was wrong with this complex piece of equipment that can interrupt a 25,000 amp fault in 5 milliseconds. It turned out some grommets were worn. Chris replaced the grommets with ones he had specially machined. Chris then had to tune everything up so the breaker could interrupt a 25,000 amp fault in 5 milliseconds. The only other engineers who can do this are old enough to be Chris's dad, or granddad. These are some of the things real engineers do.
- Q: Hello All, I have an electrical equipment (face steamer) which was purchased in India (220 - 240V) and wanted to check, if I could connect this to an electrical outlet in US (producing 110V). Would this cause any damage to the equipment or the outlet ?
- You need a 110V-to-220V transformer: It has to also support at least as many Watts as your steamer.
- Q: I want to get into a field that involves fixing electrical equipment. I have always loved taking apart things like my Xbox/Playstation/cell phone so I could fixing them when they broke and I would like to further this into a career. What type of field should I study in order to pursue this goal? I am a student at the University of Arizona, so if you know of any programs there that would help a lot.
- None, depending on how or where you work. If you work for yourself you don't need any degree at all. You need to be an electronics service engineer. You have to be able to do the job. That's more important than having a piece of paper that says you got good grades and showed up or class. (I would argue this is true for most fields) You can get a degree in electronics engineering at many schools. It would be very helpful to find work at a company specializing in service of these things. Nobody repairs cell phones, it just isn't worth doing.
- Q: I would like to start testing and reconditioning some electrical equipment and I'm wondering what device or devices I can use to out put a specified voltage/amperage either AC or DC.for instance I have an electric motor that needs 5v 20amps, and I require a device that would allow me to plug into a wall outlet and regulate the voltage and amps to the proper levels for testing this device.hopefully that makes sense, thanks
- if its AC you can use a variable speed drive or VoltPac but if ur talking DC then u need an adjustable power supply. You can build one or you can probably buy a more stable unit if you have the money to spend.
- Q: I payed the bill and put in the shutoff notice for the 18th, not the 16th! Jesus Christ! I still have shite I have to move!
- I would be very pissed, you should go complain to the people
- Q: I need this for my class and I just need a site to start off with! Thanks
- (1) Try: MSDS (wikipedia) (2) Also try: Electrical equipment in hazardous areas (wikipedia) It may depend on which country you live in. References and external links for (1) and (2) above are included.
- Q: for a store of electrical equipments, I want to create a database for it, what is the data that I should maintain in this database (the names of the columns)?
- You need multiple tables. Using int() auto_increment primary keys for linking each section of data you want something like : stock_codes ( id int(6) primary key auto_increment, stock_code varchar(45) unique key, stock_description varchar(45), stock_qty int(6), suppler_id int(6) ) stock_movement ( id int(6) primary key auto_increment, in_date date, out_date date, moved_qty int(6), stock_id int(6), ) It helps to have tables of suppliers details, client details, sales person details, department details etc. If items have possible alternative suppliers you dump the supplier_id from the stock codes and use a link table for the stock id and supplier id to identify each inward transaction. Add tables for any additional information using links from the other tables to co-ordinate the data.
- Q: if you have worked in engineering consultancy, can you please tell me what are the typical projects you take and what exactly you do to help different firmswhy cant the firms do that stuff themselves , why do they need you badly ?
- I do electrical engineering and do consulting for companies for the design of electrical systems of new plants. What my company and I do is to get the general power requirements for a large building or factory and specify what transformers, wiring, fusing, lighting, and power distribution methods they will need. Because of my education and my experience, I can provide a customer with the correct power and wiring specifications. The companies then can use my specifications to hire large electrical firms to install the electrical equipment and wiring. Firms normally do not do this for themselves because: 1. It is a one-time thing and they would not generally hire some one directly to do this. 2. Many firms cannot legally do this anyway because the state and local municipalities require a state-certified professional engineer and/or engineering company (like me) to design things like this. 3. It would be very costly and inefficient for a company to acquire this capability for a short amount of time. 4. On many types of consultancy, you want to hire another company because you may want a different point of view or perspective on the problem. 5. Many consultants can provide many types of engineering capabilities to bear on a problem, which can be impractical or expensive for companies to hire. Hope this helps Paul
- Q: Hi. I have bought a kiln from Germany which is compatible with our electrical currents here in the UK - that much I know. It is a small kiln and can be used with just ordinary household electric. However, the electric lead is much thicker than the ordinary leads on my other electrical equipment. Is this just for added safety or what? I want to cut off the German plug and put on an English plug so I need to be sure this is ok. Help from a qualified electrician would be preferable if possible please. Thanks so much.
- The heavier wire is to prevent overheating. Cut off plug and wire as normal. Live to the right, Neutral to the left and Earth to the front pin. Luck.
- Q: 2)Please do include the details as to why does spark devlop wn connection at one end is loose. 3)How the +ve electrode retains itz polarity though it accepts the electrons continuously, in a closed circuit.
- 1) For laymen understanding, electrical grounding is a protection of your house against lightning, instead burning your house or someone inside your house gets fried. In your appliances, electrical grounding protects you from getting electrical shock in case one of the electrical wire touches the metal body of your appliance. Now on electronic grounding, it is a protection of a certain circuitry from getting damaged by an electrical charge from your body in case you touch it. 2) Electrical wire connection is like a water pipe connection. Electrical current passes through the wire while water current passes through the pipes. If there is a loose connection of a certain electrical wire, or loose pipe connections on your water pipes; The loose pipe connections will produce leaks while the loose electrical connections will produce sparks. 3) It always retain its polarity always. Just like magnets, it retains its polarity, north and south. Electricity is based on magnetism. Law of nature.
