- Q:I think the thinset under some of my ceramic tiles is crumbling. I have a concrete slab floor and it involves about 12 tiles between my kitchen and dining room. The grout and tiles have not cracked yet, but how would I fix the thinset without breaking up the good tiles?
- Tedr is right.. W/O seeing it its hard to tell.. Get down on your hands and knees and rap on it w/ your knuckles.. If it sounds hollow and then solid on another part that isn t making sounds then more than likely it s loose tile and just the gout and pressure is holding it together..Seen it many times.. Trdr has many of causes right too.. But its hard to say just what it is GL

- i am doing the same thing and my house is also 1485 sq ft 4 bed room 1 bth living room and kitchen and u dont want to know the price , i checked with lowes and for slate tiles for my kitchen it will cost over 1000.00 for my kitchen , 12x16 room minus where the cabinets are at they said u have to put down a cement like glue then put down a cement like board then the tiles and grout , the 1000.00 is only for the supplies not the labor , for ur other rooms hard wood would cost less than tile or new carpet

- A bit for drilling concrete works well , also they make a spade bit that can be used for tile or glass, If it is a thick tile i would use a bit and a drill with the sds chuck as it won't slip. You can get the bits at Home Depot of just about any hardware/lumber supply store. the drill with the sds chuck can be rented if you do not have one.this is if you are trying to anchor something into the tiled wall. If you want to remove the tile, you are better to pull the tile and drywall off at the same time , if you try removing the tile alone it will damage the drywall and you'll have to float the whole thing or remove it anyway. - You do not want to do this for two reasons. One is that it will take away all the protection from the tile that allows the tile itself to be water proof and stain proof. Take away the glaze and the tile will stain. The second reason is that the glaze provides most of the tile body strength. A couple of things to help prevent tiles from being slick.. Remove all wet shoes and keep the floor dry. Hard with kids I know. Anti slip area rugs helps. And lastly there are products that you can use in the mop water that helps the tiles from being slick.
