Q: I have a new bathtub with Durock cement board installed around it and I‘m ready for tile. I just got a guy out to give me an estimate for doing the tile work around the tub and he said the Durock would have to be primed first. I‘ve heard you‘re supposed to put the tile directly on the Durock, not paint it. Now I don‘t know what to do. Is he wrong? If he‘s wrong, do I hire someone else or just question him? He did another (non-tile related) job for me and did an excellent job, so I trust him, but I‘m nervous about this. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!
Do NOT prime cement board before tiling. The whole reason is to bond to the cement substance of the Durock or cement board. There are times or situations that you need to water proof cement board , but that would be a different situation. I would consider hiring some one else. He may be fine at certain projects but he does not know allot about tiling. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
Q: I live in an apartment and ive never had floor tiles like these. There is concrete underneath but I think these are ceramic tiles on top.I have no clue what to use to bring back the shine.Any suggestions would be helpful
Elbow grease.
Q: We‘re fixing our place and will need about 1200 sq ft of 24x24 tile. Any ideas as to how/where one can get this at wholesale/lower cost? Thanks!
You ll have trouble finding a lot in a 24x 24 tile wholesale/retail or other wise. These are a more pricey tile since the size alone makes them hard to handle, transport and produce. Your chance are better off in a 16x16 or 18x18 tiles because of getting that many you can pallet pricing and get a discount. Unless you have a builders license your not supposed to be able to buy them wholesale but you can get a deal in that quantity through your mom and pop flooring places. You may be able to find a deal at your discount places, but a lot of that tile is close out and discontinued tiles which I don t recommend when getting that amount.( may not be able to get more should you need it.) Q: What is all porcelain called semi-tiles
The water is certainly not in the top of the tile there is a hot extension to the warmth, although the semi-porcelain heating rate is higher, but definitely not to say that in the warm with semi-porcelain will produce problems that can be ignored in other words As long as the quality of ceramic tiles for their own home enough to wear the same degree of wear is no difference,
Q: I‘m having a small bathroom remodled. The floor isn‘t perfectly rectangular, there are some uneven areas because of the tub. I would like the opinion of a profession tiler (should there be one put there, somewhere)...should the floor tiles always be centered, or start lined up against a wall? Also, should the grout be completely dry before sealing it? Thanks.
Yes the tiles need to be centered ,but always dry lay them out to see what size cut you ll be getting at the walls left to right. If you end up with less than a 1/2 tile, shift tile over 1/2 of a tile at the center, this gives you a bigger side cut. I personally like to do a whole tile starting at the door way,I just think this is a better look , but there again you can start in the middle and dry lay them out. As far as sealing grout read directions on your particular sealer. Most silicone based sealers need the grout to cure for 30 days. Penetrating sealers ( which I suggest) take only a 72 ( 3 day) cure time. Silicone sealers wont last as long and need resealing based on your usage and what you clean with. Penetrating sealers last for years. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
Q: I want to add a backsplash with a 4x4 ceramic tile. I only want to go up 1 or 2 tiles in height not the whole wall area. Edges of the tiles are not black for the unfinished ceramic. How do I make the edges look finished or black also?
put cap over the top row of tiles. the cap tiles are usually 2 inches high by 6 inches long and they go right on top of the top row of tiles.
Q: The 12 by 12 tiles were laid 7 years ago and nothing is different, but last October some of them over by the exterior wall of the house started tenting. There had been no more or less rain. What would make them do this? Here‘s some more info:-They started cracking in the part of the house that was added on.-The new foundation may not have been sealed.-My brother put them down and he tends to do a crappy job at best. He thinks they were cheap tiles.-I found traces of termites when I started pulling them up (seems unrelated since they‘re ceramic tiles, but one never knows...)Any advice on replacing them would be greatly appreciated!

Q: I need pink ceramic 4x4 tiles to repair an old bathroom. At least 80 of them. Where might I find them?
1 st try and determine whos tile it is, this will help cut down the looking time and possibly stop your looking all together .. If you have 1 spare tile look on the back to see if there there is any lettering on the back , this I ll help you with if you need help. Measure the tile , if its 4 3/8 ths you don t need to look at Florida tile, if its 4 1/4 start with American Olean and Interceramic if the tile is 15/20 years or older.. Anything else start by going to tile distributors and tile shops taking a tile or a pc with you. Realizing that you may not get a perfect tile match because of dye lots and shading even after a couple months this can be a problem.. Any questions e mail me through my avatar and I ll be glad to help and you can check my qualifications there .. GL
Q: We recently remodeled our kitchen and are now ready to apply something between the counter and wall cabinets. We are thinking of tile. Our cabinets are a light oak. The counters are a marble looking blend of grey, blue, beige. Our appliances are beige. What color tile would look nice for this? Also, could you use 12x12 tile vs 4x4 or the smaller tile or is smaller tile better? We currently have unpainted drywall. Can you install tile with drywall behind? Or do you need that other type of backing?
The thing to keep in mind about using 12x12 tiles in this case is that unless you are exceptionally lucky the will have to be cut. While smaller tiles may also need to be cut, the difference in size will not be as dramatic and overall the effect should be more aesthetically pleasing. There are of course more than two or three sizes available, and you may wish to consider a small border pattern of some sort as opposed to filling the entire space with one tile. For that matter you may wish to have alternating tiles of the same size with different but complimentary colors. As for choosing the color (or colors) it may be best to see what is available locally and purchase a single tile of different styles you think you might like, then take them home to see how they go with the rest of your kitchen. You certainly won't need to purchase those backing boards for wall tiles, but check the instructions on the adhesive you buy to see if they advise priming or otherwise treating the drywall.
Q: I‘m remodeling my house and was thinking of using porcelain tiles for my bathroom (floor only). What are the advantages/disadvantages of using porcelain instead of ceramic, et cetera?
Porcelain looks good but is expensive. Also, don't drop anything on it or it has a greater chance of breaking
