- Chairs are ambitious projects for a beginner. They must be both engineered and built well so they withstand use and designed well so they look and feel nice. To add to the complications, most chairs have no square joints. I think you'd better consider another project.
- Q: My friend has this folding papasan chair that I fell in love with. It would be great to have my own. She says the company that made it is Mainstays but from my searching, it would appear they do not make that kind of chair anymore. I'm finding it difficult to find any folding papasan chairs that are even close to the dimensions of hers, which are 36 inches high, 41 inches wide, and 37.5 inches deep. - Q: ok so i was really pissed this morning at my parents and i was like throwing things around, slamming doors, etc.. and when i got up from sitting at a kitchen chair i kind of slammed it on the ground too hard and one of the legs broke off.. (i know i have anger issues) and now im freaking out. it wont stand up straight on its own but i think i might have an idea.. My mom made these covers for the chairs and they go all the way down to the ground so they would hide the broken leg. In our spare room theres another chair just like it and im thinking of just switching the chairs since no one even really sits in the spare room chair, and its in the corner so i could just prop it up on the wall so it wont fall over. Is this a good idea? I will probably tell my mom later, but right now is not a good time. Any other suggestions on what i should do???? Please no mean answers, i know this sounds bad.. - She likely will figure out pretty quickly you switched chairs and that will only add to the heat. Especially if the chairs are not the same make. Your best bet is to say you got up and accidently knocked the chair over and it broke. Being up front is going to suck but its the best way. Pull the bait and switch with the chairs and it will come back on you in a MUCH bigger way....

- Q: I'm trying to earn some brownie points with my wife after making her angry, so I decided to fix her antique rocking chair that belonged to her grandmother. Initially, just the arm was broken (really loose and would get knocked off really easily.) I sat down on the chair to get a closer look and the entire thing collapsed. It's now sitting on floor in about 10-12 split pieces. She will likely be home in a couple hours, so is there a good way to fix this in a timely manner? I can post more info if needed.

- Q: i have these wooden chairs that have dried peeling paint i need to get off so i can stain them. there is no varnish or stain i can see, just old paint. Is sanding it off the best way to go? are there sanders small enough to get into the corners and grooves? i am pregnant, so chemicals are not an option. thank you!
- Unfortunately there is no easy way to do this, you can have the chairs dipped by a professional stripper, the whole chair is submerged in a solution and comes out clean, usually though this weakens the joints so some minor repairs may need to be done. even with the paint stripped off you will still need to do some sanding. Plus, and this does not always happen but once you stain and apply the topcoat (shellac or polyurethane, etc) some of the stripping chemical agent may still be present in the wood and this topcoat may cause it to leach out and bubble the finish. We've found that washing the stripped piece with lacquer thinner, allowing it to dry then sanding will yield suitable results. It's not that daunting a task and worthwhile in the end.

- Q: i have one of those music chairs with the 2 speakers, and subwoofer, but is there a way to take that awful subwoofer out and put in a new one? theres not a place to unzip the chair or anything, but the subwoofer distorts on about every song that i play. and what can i replace it with to make it have a lil bass without distortion?
- Interesting question...let's see if I can be of any help. The way I see it, you have roughly two choices here (3 actually, but I'll save it for last.) 1) You can take the chair apart to get to the speaker, take it out and either replace it with a similar one (like a car subwoofer speaker - check the Ohm rating) or get the broken one fixed. 2) You could bypass the subwoofer altogether - but you'd have to find the wires to it and carefully disconnect them without shorting them. Then go and buy another inexpensive subwoofer, hook it up directly to your receiver (assuming that you had a receiver driving the chair system) - making sure to place the sub right next to (or under) the chair - to get a similar butt massage effect from the bass. or 3) toss the whole mess out. graduate and get a real speaker/subwoofer set up instead. Hope this kind of helps. I was serious with the first two ideas, the thrid was admittedly a wee bit glib. Please forgive me.
