- Q: I found this chair sitting in our garage for about a year now and I want to put it in my bedroom. The problem is that its kinda dirty.. Its like a cream color but it has dark marks on the arms its from my uncles tools. It's not a leather or recliner chair its just a regular sitting chair. - They make plastic lawn chairs that are cheap ($10-20). A one piece molded chair is light, stack able, and easy to clean. You can buy them at W-Mart, drug stores (seasonal), hardware stores, etc. Folding chairs (with woven fabric) are another possibility. They are also light, fold able, and inexpensive. And, as an added advantage, you can take them outside when the weather is nice.
- Q: I am repairing one leg of a mortise ant tenon teak chair. The joint has come loose and I dont really want to take the whole chair apart to fix one leg. I know you are supposed to rub the joint with acetone before gluing in up. The problem with that is that I cannot do a good enough job of cleaning the wood as the mortise and tenon is just loose and there is no real way of taking it apart.My question, id there a way of getting the glue sufficiently in the joing without taking the chair apart. Secondly, what glue could I use that doesnt require rubbing the piece with acetone.Thanks
- Try Murphy's Oil Soap (found in local grocery or mass merchant) and a non-scratch pot scrubber (it's like plastic steel wool). This should take off dirt, dust, and gunk without harming the natural finish.
- Q: I found a very cool shaped very old chair at a junk shop for $5. It is in fairly good shape and sturdy (none of the arms or legs wiggle). But it is missing the seat, which I would imagine was one time a woven cane seat that has fell out. I would prefer not to re-cane a new seat (I have done this before, but I don't find it comfortable to sit on this type of seat and they don't wear well). I would much rather put in a padded upholstered seat, but am not sure how? There is just a large hole in the middle where the seat used to be, and I'm having trouble thinking of ways to attach a piece of wood with padding and upholstery. It doesn't have to be super sturdy, as it won't have more than a 170lb person in it, and will more than likely not be used daily (it will be for our bedroom). - Well, I think the thing to do here is cut a piece of 1/4 plywood and inch or so bigger in each dimension than the hole. then put your piece of foam on it with some spray adhesive, and wrap like quilt batting and upholstery fabric over it and staple underneath. then to attach, without damaging your antique frame, I would say attach some turn button type things. If you glued some blocks onto the plywood just a little thinner than the chair frame, and then some longer blocks screwed to those which trap the chair frame under them.

- Q: Okay, this is a serious question. When I smell my seat, it straight up smells like farts. I am a clean person and occassionally let one rip (like anyone else), but it seems like my computer chair absorbs the smell.Is this normal? Do all chairs smell like this eventually? How do I get this embarrassing smell out?I find it embarrassing because now that I notice it, I'm not sure if other people who come over and use the computer will notice it to, or if it's just in my mind.And if a fart is just a gas, how come it doesn't just hit the chair and then evaporate away into the air? It makes me think there is more to farts than just gas. Maybe they also contain the elements solids and/or liquids. Please help. This is embarrassing. Perhaps your chair is made of material and is simply absorbing dirt, dust and smells and aromas from just daily living ie ~ perfumes, food smells, cigarette smoke etc.etc.etc. A good way to spritz it up and sanitise it is to go get yourself some pure essential eucalyptus oil from the chemist or local pharmacy. Put a capfull of eucalyptus oil into a spray bottle full of warm water, shake well and spray over the entire surface of your chair and wipe over with a damp cloth or sponge. Eucalyptus oil is a brilliant antibacterial and antiseptic agent and will eliminate all those nasty odors that are bugging you so much? It is also an all natural remedy and contains no chemicals or nasties to irritate sensitive bodies? Caution: Don't use eucalyptus oil if you have high blood pressure or suffer from epilepsy?if either is the case simply substitute for pure essential tea tree oil, which is also a great antibacterial and antiseptic? - because to get hit in the body there would have to be a screw out or something so it would scrape them if the chair hit them continuasally then yea they probly will bleed
- Q: Do people still do this? As a teacher, sometimes the little 2nd graders can be loud and disruptive and can't quiet down. Do you like the quiet chair method? If not, what method do you use. As an example, this morning as I was teaching a lesson, a girl was constantly whispering to her friend so I simply said Mia, will you please go sit in the quiet chair? Not saying it doesn't work, but should I update my method?
- Yes, it still is used. Quiet Chair is a nicer name than Time Out Chair and better understood by a 2nd grader. If you have the children together on a rug by your story chair, insist that all are quiet and ready to listen before you begin a story. Hands on own lap, voices off. Do this for lessons, too. If they talk when they shouldn't, give a warning. Then have child move further away if on the floor or move the desk a bit to increase personal space. Then the child moves to the Quiet Chair. Loud and disruptive is just not acceptable during lessons time. If this is a recurring problem, add a step to your morning attendance and calendar routine. Review the class rules - even if you have to do it every day for a week. Emphasize what you expect for storytime and lessons. 1-2-3- eyes on me, and a frequently repeated rule in my room, Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself. This is our expectation. That makes it more a matter of breaking the rule, not just making the teacher mad (which I try not to do). We stop and recite the rule to get back on track.
