- Q:I am adding three to four new recepticles in my basement. This will be a new series comming from the box. I will be using a 20amp breaker and 12 gauge wire. I Know how to wire one recepticle, but not sure if i should pigtail the white and black wires from the first recepticle and then continue to every other recepticle in the same mannner. there will be no swithces etc. and of course i want it to be in parallel.
- Good choice of wire gauge and breaker for 4 outlets. Run wires as you stated to the first outlet using the bottom screws. Start the run for the next outlet using the top screws and do the same at every box. Do not use the convenient stick-in connections, use the screws for better continuity and voltage transfer. Last but not least, make sure the ground is firmly connected to each outlet and to the ground bar of the breaker box. Buy a lighted plug-in circuit tester at the hardware store and check the continuity of every outlet after wiring. If you have the polarity off or a ground not connected, it will tell you very quickly. They are only a few bucks and well worth it for troubleshooting circuits.
- Q:I have a live wire in my basement that is just dangling with wire nuts on the wires. It is a 3 wire cable w ground. I also have a wire I disconnected when remodeling that fed an outlet and ceiling light. This was a 2 wire with a ground. Can I use a junction box to tie the two cables together to get power back to my outlet and ceiling light? Would I just put a wire nut on the extra wire from the 3 wire cable? - We only have 120 or 240 volts in AMERICA, THAT'S 120 OR 240 Each leg carries 120 Volts What is this 110 you speak of ? If its a 240 line that breaker amp is at least 30 and you will burn your house down, if its a green wire than yes but make sure its a15 or 20 amp breaker, if 20 amp than make sure both cables are 12 Gage. Don't hook up a 20 amp breaker with 12 Gage wire tieing into a14 Gage wire or you will burn your house down.

- Q:I can't seem to find this answer anywhere on the net, but does anybody know what gauge electrical wiring is code in home construction in Minnesota? I heard 12 gauge, but I believe my home built in 2003 was done so with 14 gauge. When doing some electrical work in my home in 2004 with my father-in-law, our local Menards also said 14 gauge was code at the time, at least that's what we heard. I just had another contractor over to help finish our basement off, and said code was 12 gauge.
- It depends on what size breaker the wire is fed by. 14 is a 15 amp limit, 12 is 20 amp. Typical lights are 14 wire, receptacles are 12.

- If the unused electrical plug outlet is the only one on a specific breaker in the main panel then you probably could. One problem is - How many and the size of what you are going to plug into the two new outlets. The size of the cable is another problem. the further you run and the more things you have plugged in - the larger the cable. Another - To bury the cable you will need Special underground, (UF), rated cable. Buried cable needs to be larger then overhead cable due to lack of heat dissipation. Usually a buried 120V cable has to be a minimum of 30 deep and some require schedule 40 PVC conduit or pre-assembled cable inside special, black, coiled conduit. Another - the cable from the main panel - to the unused outlet - needs to be the same size as the new cable to out-buildings so . . . It would be better to run a specific cable from the main panel and not tie into the unused outlet. It can be done unless you are planning on running much more than a few lights or low wattage accessories?.
