Application of Our Glazed Porcelain Tile:
- Q: We are building a tile shower and we have gotten it framed the way we want it. We haven‘t installed the backerboard or tiles yet, just the studs are placed. Do we need to backerboard and tile the sides where the door will be, or can we install the shower door directly to the bare wood studs?
- Tile first. Doors mount to tile. Make sure you put a nailer in where the hinges will go, so that you have something solid to screw into.
- Q: In my Bathroom, I want to update the tile. It‘s the small rough octagon shape in white w/black speckles. Grout is also white. I hate it, stays dirty. Thought about sanding it and putting a dye and sealer on it, but I dont know if this can be done. 2nd choice is replacing the grout w/black but I am back with the white tile, does anyone know if the sanding and dyeing it would work? I thought I would try this first, it would be cheap, because I have a sander and I can do it myself.. and thought I could maybe use the dye you use to dye clothes (possible?) and then just a polyurthane to seal. If I do anything else like, remove ceramic tile, this may be costly..Any suggestions?
- There are special cleaners for cleaning that type of tile and bringing it back up to white. The problem is that this type of tile is pourous and over the years its absorbed the dirt and water from use so it may not come clean and sanding it will not help as its gotten down into the stoneware. At that point, you will have no other choice but to rip it out and replace it all. If it does come up clean with a cleaner, you must seal it or it will dirty again quickly. Do not use polyurethane as it will yellow and look like poo.
- Q: I am tiling my kitchen countertop and want to put in some wood trim pieces around the front edge like is in newer homes with tile countertops. What I want to know is, where in Lowe‘s can I get that? Is it going to be with all of the moulding, etc., and am I looking for something inparticular? Thanks!

- Q: I‘m having a small bathroom remodled. The floor isn‘t perfectly rectangular, there are some uneven areas because of the tub. I would like the opinion of a profession tiler (should there be one put there, somewhere)...should the floor tiles always be centered, or start lined up against a wall? Also, should the grout be completely dry before sealing it? Thanks.
- Yes the tiles need to be centered ,but always dry lay them out to see what size cut you ll be getting at the walls left to right. If you end up with less than a 1/2 tile, shift tile over 1/2 of a tile at the center, this gives you a bigger side cut. I personally like to do a whole tile starting at the door way,I just think this is a better look , but there again you can start in the middle and dry lay them out. As far as sealing grout read directions on your particular sealer. Most silicone based sealers need the grout to cure for 30 days. Penetrating sealers ( which I suggest) take only a 72 ( 3 day) cure time. Silicone sealers wont last as long and need resealing based on your usage and what you clean with. - Q: how do i do the measuring and lay out on a 10 foot by 6 foot floor when laying the tiles diagonally?
- A 10x6 room requires 60 square feet of tile to cover the floor. On a normal square to the walls pattern, I would order 10% more tile to cover waste. On a diagonal pattern, you will have more waste. I would order 15% to 20% more tile to cover waste. To set up to lay the tile, I start by picking the most obvious sight line in the room - maybe from the next room through the door and chalk a line perpendicular to the far wall along that sight line and parallel to the side wall. Then you chalk a line 45 degrees wall to wall through the center point of the center of the first line. This is your 45 degree pattern. Chalking a line wall to wall 90 degrees from the second chalk line through that same center point gives you your grid pattern to set your tile from. Ignore the first line - that was for reference only - line two and three are the lines you set your tile from. Set out tile dry with spacers to see if you like the effect. I will sometimes set out all of the whole tile possible in the room and walk around to see if it looks good. If it doesn't look right or you end up with too small pieces along the edges or in the doorways, you can move your initial start point and rechalk your lines.
- Q: What is better tiles or carpet in a living room considering I have 3 kids ( 4 , 3 and 2 ) ? what about the kitchen?
- I had a house that was ceramic tile through out-I loved it. You know when your tile is dirty and when it's clean its very clean. You'll be able to clean up spills without freakin. Plus you can use rugs and take them out and clean both sides when they are dirty. It's easy to switch out decor- and it always smells good. No lingering food smells. I really think you'd want to pick out a neutral natural looking color with some depth in it so keep the kid-o's from slipping, but when it's time for a new puppy or pet-no sweat-

- The best way to remove paint without ruining the tiles with scrape marks is to use a chemical stripper. Try a spot in an inconspicuous place. My only concern for you is that the grout might have absorbed the black paint so the black tinting may remain once the paint is removed from the tile. Your test spot will reveal the results and you can decide to follow through with the rest of the room or not.
