- Q:I am installing 4.5 x 4.5 porcelain tiles on a drywall kitchen backsplash. Applying Omnigrip mastic using a 1/4 x 3/16 vnotch trowel. The tiles have a waffle grid pattern on the back which is about 1/16 deep. I tested the application of one tile and noticed that the mastic did not fill all the waffle depressions. Are they supposed to be all filled? DO I have to backbutter the tiles? Am I using the correct trowel size? Please help!P.S. What is the purpose of the waffle pattern in the first place?

- It is possible to paint tile but this does wear very quickly and does not work very well .Other than using a resin based floor paint there is not a lot you can do with tiles

- Other than replacing the tile( which is a challenge for anybody) , all I recommend to my costumers is to cover the chip with an enamel to hide as best as possible. Grout won t hold since it s shallow and nothing to grip to.And the big splotch will stand out worse.An appliance repair enamel works well if you can find one to match or your tile is of a color that you can match..A rug or furniture is always a good stand by trick. There is a product called the Bona Hardwood Floor Mop as well... it is a hardwood flooring cleaner but there are other cartridges you can purchase that is a tile flooring cleaner to attach to the mop! I love the Bona! Maybe you'll like it too! I have both cleaners for the Bona, hardwood and tile... they're amazing!

- Q:I‘m installing a kitchen back splash of 1 x 1 glass tile. Right now there is drywall where the tile will be. I‘ve read that it is better to use cement backing board as a substrate. Is this really necessary or can I just use thin-set to mount the tile directly to the drywall and then grout as usual? Thanks for your help!
- Drywall is a suitable substrate for the glass tile. You want to make sure that the drywall is clean, wipe it down with mineral spirits. Next you will want to mark a level line. 1 glass tiles are fairly heavy when mounted on a 12 mesh sheet, and will tend to sag. This level line will be the top mark of your lower sheet. After you have your line either drawn or chalked, you will want to use a glass tile specific mortar, such as Mapei Adesilex P10. This is a non sagging mortar with a bright white color to allow the glass color to pop. Be sure to follow the mixing instruction to get the best performance, and only mix as much as you can use in a short period of time. Glass tiles are great for backsplashes because of the ease of maintenance, so make sure to use a grout that give you the same performance. Mapei has Opticolor grouts which are stain-free, but offer the same installation as regular grout. Last bit of advice is to be patient, work at your own pace, and step back every other sheet to make sure it looks good as you go.
- Q:My husband and I laid 4x4 square ceramic tiles on our counter tops. We have sealed them and everything....So the question I have is how do you get rid of the sandy resadue on the tiles from doing the grout work?
- The concern is that you've already sealed the tile job. You can still get the residue off, but if you sealed the residue onto the tile, it's going to be more difficult. Go to a building supply store (like Lowe's or Home Depot or Sears hardware) and get a cleaner for grout that contains phosphoric acid. It works really well on grout residue. It works better if you attach the problem within 10 days of the grout job. If that doesn't seam to work, try some wax remover on the tile to remove the sealer. Then use the phosphoric acid. Then, you'll have to reseal. Finally if none of that works, you may have to resort to muriatic acid (hydrochloric acid) which is not fun to play with and can be dangerous. Follow the instruction and warnings carefully. Good luck
