- Q:I bought a new amp and sub to replace my old ones. I disconnected the battery, unplugged the old amp and plugged the new one in and when I reconnected my battery the power cable began to smoke at all the exposed ends and got very hot. What causes this? Is it because the new amp requires more current than the old one and that is causing it to get very hot? And what is the solution to my problem?Thanks
- you are creating a short circuit with the battery if this is happening while the amp is not on. disconnect all wires and make sure your positive lead goes to only positive terminal /amp input. then do the same for the ground. if you dont have a fuse protecting the wire it will get so hot it will melt the insulation and start a fire. if this is happening only when the amp is on and your system is pulling a large current through it (music real loud) then you need to upgrade your wires asap. make sure you have a fuse protecting the power wire close to the battery and a fuse whenever you downgrade in size of wire. a $1 fuse with the correct rating for the wire its protecting will safe your *** if you short circuit.

- Q:I have my friends PC at my house to change a few components but apparently the PC doesn't work properly. - If it's near the plug end, the one that goes into the wall, it's easy. You can buy a replacement plug, cut off the old one and wire on the new one. Wire strippers would be handy but you could strip the wires with a carefully used sharp utility knife, and you will need a screwdriver to deal with the plug itself. If it's very close to the foot pedal end or the machine plug side, that might be a bit harder, depending how much wire there is between the damaged cable and the pedal or plug. You could cut away the damaged portion, splice the wires with wire nuts, cover firmly with electrical tape and be done. If there isn't room to do that, you might have to take the foot pedal apart and re-attach the wires from the rest of the cable. Shouldn't be that hard to do. Just note where the wires went inside the foot pedal.

- it has to do with voltage, the higher the voltage the greater the push behind the electricity flowing through the wire. a low voltage, like a car 12 volt battery doesnt have as much push so in order to get the amount of power you need for an amplifier a lot more electrons need to flow which is why you need a bigger wire. a high voltage will push more electrons so you dont need a bigger wire. think of it like a water pipe. A small pipe with a large pump will move a lot of water. In order to get the same amount of water flowing with a small pump, you need a large pipe to allow more water to flow. speakers work using a range of voltages to produce sound. voltages that are higher than 12 volts. Also amplifiers are never 100% efficient. meaning they do not use all the electricity they receive to power speakers. a certain percentage of power will be lost in the form of heat. so it takes a bit more power in than it puts out
- Q:Im running a dedicated power cable from battery to trunk for 2 amps and i just want to know if drilling a hole through the firewall is the only way to do it? What happens in 15 years when the hole gets rusted and coroded from the moisture even with a gromet?
- Depends how much space you have and the gauge of the power cables. I had to drill a hole in my fire wall to fit my 0 gauge power cable. But I used a size were I had to force my cable through so there wouldn't be any gaps. But you don't have to worry much about rust. If you ever pull your carpet off, you will notice a lot of holes. There normally drain holes they will rust after a while but it's nothing to serious. I got a 87 Jag with rust around the drain holes in the trunk but it's still strong.

- Bad wiring in the house? Sounds at least like a situation like that. Not uncommon in buildings of certain times.. older types of wiring used. And worse not ready for todays amount of electronics. So yeah check the wiring. In between time buy a few extension boxes, you know the type with more then 1 electronic socket. But most important a switch. That way you can switch it off and that way such discharges won't happen any more.
