I don't know much about solar power. This does however seem to be a very interesting idea. But I'd imagine that the complexity of building such a structure would be far more difficult that just laying thousands of large panels in an area. The shadow from higher panels may also have an adverse affect on the lower panels. Consider the tiny panels that do provide energy and compare them to a large panel that is easier to make.

The one I looked at (other answer) seems to just be an assembly guide to put together solar cells into panels. That is fine, but you still have to buy the solar cells, the expensive part. The assembly is just putting them in series/parallel to produce higher voltages and currents. .

Only by doing the calculations (figuring out how much you electricity bill is per month now and calculate how much time it will take to get to the figure of your solar panels. Don't forget to add a couple of percentage points per year higher(since when has electrical costs gone down)? and do the addition. That is when you will pay off the solar panels, as their power is free.
