- Q: do I have to blow insulation in the roof of my mobile home if I install foam insulation under a meatle roof?
- Some mobiles have a vented attic and some don't. If your attic is vented, the foam on the roof won't help insulate inside the house. I've blown insulation into a mobile home attic before (vented attic), but some mobiles one can't (not vented attic). There are different variations of attic venting, dictating if you can blow in or not. I would add insulation anyway, if you can, mobiles usually skimp on attic insulation, even if they are "certified".
- Q: what effect does changing the pitch of a roof have on the insulation properties and durability of a roof?
- by raising the pitch the attic will stay in the cooler in the summer. also the steeper the roof the less wear you will have on certain types of roofing. wood, metal , and tile like steep roofs. mineral roofs dont, since the grainuals on the tar rub off easily during rains and snow will stick to the mineral surface and rip off the grainuals on the steeper roofs. a good pitch is a 6 and 12 pitch. this works well with all roofs and gives good cooling plus you can still stand on it to door any work
- Q: Does snow on the roof help or hurt my heating bill?
- To building professionals, it means you are properly insulated. It does help a bit, in that without it, you'd be exposed to cold winds, which are worse in removing heat from the house. Typically, we like to see (and count on) some snow in how we design houses and size the structural elements of the house & roof. If you are talking over about 3', though, we might be getting nervous about the weight. Each city/area requires that we deal with normal snow loads of that area. But 3' deep means there's about 180 pounds per sq foot of weight on your roof. About that point, I get up there and remove most of it (I leave about 12" thick). Still same on the thermal characteristics but safer on structural. .
- Q: Why is the most insulation needed in ceilings or roofs? Just wanted to know
- well insulation in general is to keep the inside temperature different than the outside. since hot air usually rises, i think it is to keep warm air form escaping in winter. also you don't usually have a heater in the attic, or air conditioning so insulation will keep the air in the attic from having an effect on the air within the house. that is my idea as to why
- Q: what action should a plumber take?????
- struggling to understand your question! are you talking about a storage tank? what is the problem with the insulation? if it is in the way move it but insulation under a tank is not a problem the tank will need to be insulated any way!
- Q: if you had snow and all the snow is off your roof and the house nex store has snow do we need insulation?
- That is very observant of you. Yes this could indicate that you are losing more heat than normal through your roof. Though, you do want to be careful in the placement of any new insulation, you will want to avoid any vents that are there for ventilation of heat and moisture in the summer and any recessed lighting fixtures as to not cause an overheating problem with them. This is a good investment and it will pay you back in heating and cooling cost for years to come.
- Q: I am purchasing a mobile home with a shingled roof. The shingles need to be replaced (>15yrs old) and with the cost of heating going up each day I thought I would added some of that 2" thick rigid insulation. I would place this right on top of the existing roof and then place the firring strips for the metal roof right on top of the rigid insulation panels (which are 4x8'). By using 3" galvanized sheet rock screws I will get a good solid attachment. Then I will put the metal roofing on to the firring strips as normal. Does anyone see any downside to doing this? Has anyone tried this before?
- I agree with the soundness of every part of your plan EXCEPT not removing the original shingle roof. The shingle roof is already at the end of its usable life. There’s no benefit to covering up old problems, and they will most likely affect the durability of the new roof. Plus, removing the old roof gives you the opportunity to inspect and repair any issues with the roofing deck. Your new insulation and metal roof will attach better and perform better by removing the old shingle roof.
- Q: We have plenty down at the center, so many, you can carpet a garden. So, since I'll have to tear down the roof and improve the insulation in a few months, I was thinking of adding one extra layer... of emergency blankets. Since they can reflect the sun's heat up, and the heat under it down, will they do that for a whole house? Will the plastic film cause water condensation? If you wouldn't recommend it, then what would you recommend?
- They may help, but as thin as they are, installing them would be about as easy as putting socks on a rooster!
- Q: we have liq. ammonia storage tank (capacity 40000 ton)having double wall & suspended deck.liq. NH3 stored at temp -33 degree cent. insulation (form ) being provided to annular space (wall ) but not on top roof . can you explain for exact reason.with regardsanvar shaikh
- Insulation is less necessary on the roof. The ammonia is mostly a liquid, and a liquid would absorb heat rapidly from tank walls. Above the liquid is vapor, and vapor absorb heat much less rapidly than liquid does, so insulation is less important there.
- Q: I am in the process of having a new roof installed. What are my options in regards to improving its' insulating properties?
- I’m guessing you are asking about the attic. Spray cellulose insulation is the way to go. Very green with 80% or more of the product made from recycled paper. Wet or dry depending on the need, with some system allowing for a DIY application.
