Q:Have a patio with metal roof, gets very hot during summer. Will Great Stuff insulate and stick to hot roof during summer? Thanks: I don't think Great Stuff foam insulation is meant to be applied in the manner in which you need. It is used to fill gaps and cracks, not be sprayed out in thin coats. whenever I've used it in the past, I found out it did not like to be spread out, or "worked".

Q:The attic was converted into two rooms and I want to add insulation but the space between the ceiling of the rooms and the roof is about 5 inches? How should I do this?: It sounds like you will have to use blown insulation. They will drill holes in the walls to blow the insulation in. Over time, this type of insulation will drop down or compress; so you will have to top it off over time. You might also add acoustical tile to the exiting ceiling to add a little more insulating value.

Q:im thinking of putting rolled felt paper under my metal roofing would that work instead of the reflective insulation instead?: Be careful what you do under your metal roof. We installed foam spray on insulation under ours and now the inspector is saying it's not "to code" and we lost the buyer for our house because of it. Call a metal roof company - they may give you some free advice.

Q:I am specifically considering the re-roofing of a an older home where rafters were made with 2x4 or 2x6 and the rafter space (and possibly the attic space) does not allow sufficient space for insulation and proper ventilation behind the insulation. The old layers of roofing have to be removed in any event. At this point I am considering applying insulation boards on the existing sheathing and then a new layer of sheathing before the new roofing material. (similar to a SIP: structural insulated panel) The two issues I am concerned with is that the insulation can act as a vapor barrier. Would condensation potentially rot the lower sheathing. How is this avoided in SIP roofing panels? The second issue may be with fire regulations.: Spray in foam could be an option.. you would need to talk to someone who knows more than I do.. but Ive seen great results

Q:I am in the process of having a new roof installed. What are my options in regards to improving its' insulating properties?: If you have clear access to your rafters, the best insulation possible (after installing your vent baffles) is sprayed on foam. I didn't say polyurethane foam on purpose, as there is now a soy based foam available with exactly the same working and thermal characteristics as the petro-poly goop, with none of crude oil. But i digress. Sprayed on foam has the advantage of not only thermal insulation but it also seals everything that it comes in contact with, thus stopping any air movement, something that no fiberglass or extruded polyurethane could ever do. Industry experts are still debating this but, it looks like 1 inch of sprayed on foam (with it sealing qualities) does as much, if not more, than 3 1/2 inches of fiberglass and, foam will never sag or absorb moisture like glass does. Fill your rafter spaces and gloat to the neighbors when your bills come in. :)

Q:I have a low pitched roof so there isn't that much room up there hands and knees only.I have no eave ventilation but the ventilation is through the front and back of the house through triagle metal caps cut into the wood siding. I already have some R19 in the ceiling joists but was wondering would putting it in the rafters against the plywood holding the shingles also help insulate the living area of the house.: Best way and easy cheap way is just roll out unpapered fiberglass over top of joist at right angles to existing insulation

Q:the best way to thermal insulate and water proofing of rcc slabs economical, may be some poly urethane material or whatever but should be very effective and light weight.: use a polythene sheet . i dont know about where u live but where i live we get very long and broad size thick polythene sheets to make shelter or the protect from rain . even poor ppl use it to make slums . they attach a sheet in bamboo and they bury half of that bamboo stick inside the ground and by arranging 4 of them like this in a square area they make a bamboo frame. then as i said they attach sheet and make temporary home but they live there for years.

Q:... building code max. (R-50)???: All the answers are OK, BUT nobody has said anything about the over hang of the house. This is not insulated and when the water runs off it comes to the roof edge and then freezes. To get away from this do what I did and move to Florida, If that is not possible get the special heat tapes for roofs and install in a "V" configuration and that will help a hole lot. Hope that this helps you out.

Q:I already have fiberglass in the attic, but would like to add more.: BLOWN BY ALL MEANS!!! SOME PLACES WILL EVEN LEND YOU A MACHINE TO BLOW IT WITH IF YOU BUY THE INSULATION FROM THEM.BAT TYPE INSULATION IS OLD SCHOOL!
