- Q: No insulation was installed under roof of my 2 story home. Im not rich but looking for info on installing about 450 ft. up there.
- Based on the geography you are put up insulation rates would differ, I would suggest initially you just call Insulation contractors who offer free home energy audits and ask them to give their estimate , based on the rates you choose one which suits your budget. Usually type of insulation you choose determines your rate, so do a little homework on it
- Q: Help please, this home had a water pipe from meter brake in the basement as it was unoccupied/empty, the owner/builder replaced all the drywall, insulation, flooring, carpet, tile, roof, windows, hot water tank, furnace, bathroom and kitchen cabinets, new paint on all, basement ceiling was spray painted black (to hide something or to seal it?). the neighbor says the home was gutted and mold tested three times, its completely redone basically a new home inside, feedback please, it "looks" great
- Don't trust anything. if there were mold tests done, make sure you see the paperwork on it and note the dates. This is a serious issue and should not be taken for granted. I'd definitely get a home inspection on your own also since so much work was done and you want to make sure it was done properly. Don't judge a book by its cover. Get all the answers you need now so you don't have to worry or deal with things down the road. The costs could sky rocket if there are still issues. Get the facts now, you'll sleep better later.
- Q: Live in Houston, very hot and humid. Looking at adding radiant and additional insulation to roof in house. We have a lot of sun, and AC bills.
- we live in the desert, and got our roof coated, and instantly noticed the difference, it is much more insulated, and provides protection against leak (which was the main reason we had it done)
- Q: 1) What thickness of rigid insulation is used on flat roofs?
- Flat Roof Insulation Thickness
- Q: In a house, it looks like an addition, that now is the kitchen , it feels HOT, it doesn't seem to have a very good insulation on the roof at all, the ceiling is already low, so, what can be done on the outside to give it more insulation?, i don't care what it is i just want to give it a GOOD insulation, the roof is flat and to shingles. Any IDEAS? , thanks!
- So there is no access above the ceiling, like a crawl space? If you cannot get above the ceiling to look then it will be difficult to determine, what you have or don't have up there. You may want to consult an insulation company for help. They may have ideas to blow in additional insulation. The spray foam that is on the link left by the other person is a foam sprayed on the roof decking and rafters when you have complete access to them. The person below me brings up another point, can you add any soffet vents to help with air flow?
- Q: We have recently moved into a house in Australia with a tin roof. There is a layer of 5cm batts on the rafters in the roof space, but the temp is 10-15 degrees C higher up there than in the house (with all the windows and doors open). I don't want to get air-conditioning, is there another way to insulate the roof and cool the house?
- go and buy a roof whirly for every 10mtr. square ,, if you don't want to spend the money then try to put in more vents in the eves so more air can be drawn into the roof space... another thing that I have always thought of doing myself is to get shade cloth and cover over the roof but not touching the tin. Maybe a blind type of thing, where you could roll it up in winter when you want to get the roof hotter. .. anyhow I think whatever you do to redude the heat you must be able to retain the heat in winter if you do not want to use a heater as well... cool luck ''lol"
- Q: Rather than waste that heat on sunny days during the heating season, can it be used to help heat the home? Otherwise it would just passively be vented out. Has anyone done this? Is it a good idea or not?
- that is being done now and is called solar heat where dark panels are installed on a roof and the collected heat is drawn into the home via a liquid medium. The alternative of which you speak: between the insullation and roof ,,is just not practical to build. nor would it provide a greater heat than the aforementioned.
- Q: Finally remembering to do so, before my family and I left the house for approximately 4 hours, I turned off the heat before leaving. When we came home I turned it back on, but was shocked to see that the temperature had dropped 4 degrees in that time. 4 degrees in just under 4 hours seems like a lot of heat loss, does it not? I've seen the insulation in our roof and it's just that sawdust looking stuff spread everywhere. I feel like I'm paying a lot of unnecessary dollars for heating: the air does kick on every hour or two and we keep the thermostat at 68.Is it reasonable for me to talk to my landlord about this problem and getting better insulation in the ceiling, and maybe in the roof? (the master bedroom, on the far corner of the house, is always 2-3 degrees below the rest of the house). Are my expectations to not lose a degree of heat or more per hour unreasonable? Would a typical landlord consider this a problem worth discussing?
- Yes, you can ask, but don't expect him to seriously entertain the idea of actually doing it. You rented the house at it was. The landlord has no obligation to spend money on improving it so you can save money. That amount of heat loss in that time is insignificant. If I turned my heat off for four hours in the just-around-freezing weather we are having right now, I would expect my house to cool off a lot more than 4 degrees. My furnace is coming on for a few minutes at least every 15 minutes to keep the place at just over 60F. I have the lowest heating bill of anyone I know.
- Q: Best roofing insulation to keep warm in the winter?
- depending on where you live,if possible,r30 fiberglass or blown in either is the standard around here, and, for sure never block your ventilation, you need the air in your attic, freezing cold attics don't make you cold if you're properly insulated
- Q: I would like to know which direction the one side with foil faces. The roof or the interior of the room? This is an attic room. Roof being "raw" i mean that it looks like cedar tongue in groove boards...then shingles on top of them. Which way do i face the foil side of the sheet..?thanx
- The foil side should go to the outside. I believe it's a moisture barrier.
