Q: Faced or Unfaced fiberglass? How much might it help with sound reduction? Right now Unfaced R30 fiberglass is just under $10 a batt for aprox 30 sq feet. I'm not sure if that is too much R value for a ceiling or if you can even use unfaced batting If it isn't ok for a basement ceiling then I can get some R13 kraft faced for $40/ 163 sq feet.
Are you more concerned with heat retention, or sound reduction? If your basement is already heated, 24/7, don't insulate the ceiling. Concentrate on the walls. Chances are, if your basement is heated already, insulating the ceiling will rob the rest of your house of heat it has been getting already. Sound reduction comes mostly from properly installed drywall. RC channel is a metal strip which isolates the drywall from the wood framing. The drywall ceiling acts like a drumhead. It vibrates, with sounds. Unless you isolate it from the floor framing, sounds transmit easier to the next floor.
Q: the fabric lining my jeep's ceiling is missing in the front of my car. came down in bits and pieces and i wasn't able to reattach it. there's a material underneath that looks something like yellow fiberglass??? is that right? is it safe to be exposed to this? i don't use the car much so i haven't had it fixed yet but i'd like to know what i'm dealing with here. thanks for any help!
its not fiberglass, its a hard resin foam. Will do no harm, unless you chew it up and swallow it or snort it... But being exposed to it is not bad for your health..
Q: I am redoing my basement and am wondeirng what is the best way to insulate the basement ceiling, mainly to cut down on noise. My house is fairly old and the hardwood floors we have upstairs creak very loudly when you walk on them, and can be heard through the basement. Would fiberglass insulation work to cut down on footstep noise? If i put two layers in the ceiling would that be better? Or if I carpet upstairs would that muffle the sound?
you need to address the problem at it's source. Installing insulation will be marginal at best as the sound waves will still travel down the joists away from the source of the squeaking. Installing pad and carpet will help upstairs to some degree, but not below. Try to identify the exact, or as close as possible, locations of the squeaking floor boards. Take some long shims ( 12 or so ), coat both sides with adhesive and gently drive them between the flooring and the joists until they are snug. Repeat as necessary. Allow to cure overnight and retest for squeaks. If any areas remain, check to be sure there is not another source of the squeaking such as bridging being loose, straps for plumbing or ductwork being loose or a cracked joist.
Q: Is anyone familiar enough with asbestos to know if this ceiling tile contains them:It is clearly damaged and need to be removed if it does. Thanks.
yeah, i agree with scor, this is an insulated 2x4 tile. you have no problem here.
Q: My A\C and Heater have problems keeping up in Hot\cold weather. Its summer now (I live in the Stl area) and when its 90+ sunny my house will not get colder than 80 degrees A\C going non stop. The A\C is putting out anywhere from 59-62 degrees and from what I can tell is sized properly. In my ceiling is blown in insulation at about 4-5" sitting just above the 2x4s some places more some less. The vaulted ceiling being a little more at around 6" Is this enough? Is my problem the Heating\Cooling unit or is there not enough insulation?
The minimum ceiling insulation should be R-30, with R-40 being the norm in the northern part of the U.S. The depth of insulation required to produce a R-30 depends on the type of insulation. Blown-in fiberglass will have about R-2.25 per inch, blown-in cellulose has about R-3.5 per inch and fiberglass batt has about R-3 per inch. In case you're not sure what type you have, fiberglass insulation looks like cotton candy, while cellulose looks likes ground-up newspaper. Batts are the best to install as there will be less airborne particles to breath, get in your eyes, etc. You just cut them to size and lay them across the ceiling joist so they seal any gaps caused by the ceiling joist, fans, light fixtures, etc.
