Q:I was driving to work this morning, and my engine light came on. I have a 2001 Cavalier 2.2L 4 Speed Automatic with a little over 80,000 miles on it. The car was running fine, but then the light came on, and I freaked. I opened my manual, which said one of the problems could be due to my fuel cap not placed on properly. When I got back home, I checked, and sure enough, it was loose. However, when I went out later on, the light was still on and has not gone away. How long will it stay on? Should I go to the mechanic just to be safe even though my car is running fine?

the car's computer checks for evap system leaks every ignition cycle. once it finds a problem and sets a code (check engine light on), you must fix the problem. once the problem is fixed, the computer will reset on it's own after a certain number of ignition cycles so long as it doesn't still detect a leak. if it doesn't shut off, after a day or two, take it to your local auto parts store and have the computer scanned. if the light was a result of a loose cap, the code should be something like; large evap system leak detected, or small evap system leak detected. if it's something related to the evap system, have them clear the codes and watch for the check engine light for the next few days. if it's not evap system related, then i recommend taking it to a trusted auto service center. (auto parts stores like o'reilly auto parts, advance auto parts, etc. will scan it for free by the way) good luck!

Q:Last Week while I was driving I noticed a small batterie shaped light come on. I looked at the gauge that shows your batterie voltage and it showed normal. Truck acted fine (1997 Ford F250 7.3 diesel), and shortly after (mabe 5 miles or so) the light when off.Last night when I started it I noticed that light (along with the others that come on when you crank the engine), stayed on. I moved the truck about 200‘ and shut it off (light was still on). This morning when I cranked my truck the light stayed on. Then, a few miles down the road, it went off. It came back on about 30 miles later, and stayed on till I got to work (another 8 miles or so). Truck is running fine.I am guessing it is not my regular batterie (since the gauge shows normal), so is it the batterie for the glow plugs?So, I got out my manual and it says if that light comes on, to have the charging system checked? How? Who does that (preferably besides the dealer)? What kind of out of cost am I looking at? Any help?

Could be the alternator or the battery. It is most probably the alternator. You could take it to an auto parts store. They can test it while its running. You will have to find someone reputable to do the work if it need replacing.

Always be concerned when an idiot light comes on. Take the car to determine why the light came on. If the light is red in color, tow the car or get someone to diagnose it where the car is at. Do not drive it because you can cause serious damage. If it's amber/orange you can drive it, but get it looked at to prevent further damage. Amber lights can also mean a sensor has stopped working properly which will cause inefficiencies.

Q:i got a flat yesterday. my boyfriend came and fixed it with the spare that came with the car. its been running fine and no damage could have really resulted from the flat. does the check engine light come on when a spare is on the car??

A spare shouldn't make the check engine light come on, even if it's one of those doughnut spares. It must be a coincidence. Quite a few things can make that light come on. Even a loose gas cap.

Q:This morning my Highlander (has about 80,000 miles on it) started beeping at me ((the noise when you leave a door open, or don‘t have your seatbelt on). I looked and my gas light is on. Underneath it, it says Fuel Door. It‘s also now making a kind of rumbling bumping noise whenever I start or turn off the engine, and it stalled a bit when I tried to drive out of a parking lot.I have three quarters of a tank and I unscrewed/rescrewed the gas cap on and it still says it. The last time I touched the fuel door (before today) was last Thursday when my mom and I got gas together- and it‘s worked fine this entire week, so I know I didn‘t leave it unscrewed or damage it in any way. I haven‘t noticed that my gas has been getting used up any faster than normal, so I don‘t think it‘s leaking.Do I need to get to an auto repair shop ASAP? Can it wait a day? What‘s wrong with my car?

You can wait till you are sure that your fuel is low .

Did u put in fuel shortly before the light came on? I own 2 service centers the most common situation with Check Engine lights are because the fuel cap wasn't re-installed or not tightened. When you refuel make sure it clicks when putting back on. We don't charge for a Code Reading but a dealer will, don't go there. Go, like the others suggested, to Murray's, Auto-zone. If it is the fuel cap you re-install it correctly, the light will go off after a short drive. Good Luck. This flashing light, especially in the back overtaking when used, because the turn signal in the back when the driver can not cause the attention of the other side, so the use of headlights, is a warning signal - I want to overtake, beware!
