it depends what it was. the check engine light just tells you there's a code stored in the computer's memory. you need the code reader to retrieve the code. my guess is your gas cap wasnt tightened properly after you filled up at costco, throwing a #1443 code, indicating a problem in the evaporative emissions control system (EEC). a loose gas cap will bleed off the vacuum pressure the vehicle uses for the test, causing you to fail the test after you drove away from costco. or it could be some other thing that shows up intermittently. you need to pull the codes stored in the memory to know for sure what happened after you filled up. the gas smell sounds like a seperate problem that occured before you drove away from costco and got an error code. could be a fuel leak somewhere. in newer cars, just turning the key to the on position will power the electric fuel pump. turn off the radio and fan and when you turn the key you'll hear the pump whirring for about a second in your fuel tank, pressurizing the fuel system to feed your injectors the instant you start the car. just turn the key on a few times and leave it on and then go follow your fuel lines to your fuel rail and down each injector and see if you see any fuel leaks. open the hood and use your nose to see if you smell gas. you could have a bad fuel pressure regulator or some bad o-rings, cracked injector, fuel filter

Use a code reader and find out why the check engine light is on. You have a bad electronic component in the ignition system.

That depends on which part of the system you need. The most common problem in that system it the secondary air injection pump. It is located under the vehicle kind of in a little corner between the frame rail and crossmember. Because they are under the truck, they tend to get dirt, debris, and moisture in them which causes them to go bad. Looking at the types of games you like, I would say a PS3 would be the best new system for you. It's not got a lot of games yet, but it has the most advanced hardware, so over time, it will be better than the Xbox 360. But don't spend thousands of dollars on that new stuff. Get an old Xbox (not a 360, the old xBox), then get it modded. Yeah, the graphics won't be as good as the new stuff, but you haven't gamed in a long time so you aren't going to miss that. You can buy an xBox for less than a third of the price that you will pay for a new system, and the games cost next to nothing. Then, for $200 get your box modded. There are hundreds of sites where you can look to get that done. Once that happens, you'll have emulators for all kinds of different old systems. NES, Sega Genesis, Atari 2600, your old Super Nintendo, name it, and you'll also have a whole lot of other media functions too. Do yourself a favor and look into what a modded xbox can do before you drop $185,000 on a PS3. I wouldn't trade my xbox, even up, for any of the new systems. *edit* The Xbox 360 is the descendant of the original xbox. It's a new system entirely. It's a more advanced system than the xbox but it isn't as flexible.
