- Well the size is really up to you, I would probably keep it in a neat rectangle or square though, only as wide as the door is, but that's hardly a requirement. What kind of tile is it though, cause the installation will vary greatly depending on that. Need a bit more info =)

- Directly to the wall in your situation will work fine. You are better off using a thin set ( latex or a latex modified the bag will say) I ve done 100 s of FP s this way I would use a metal edging on the inside of the surround rather than a caulk or grout, since both will look bad shortly from the metal on the fire chamber will expand and contract. Don t forget to seal the stone at least once before installation ( I do all mine twice before installation ) This so you don t stain it w/ glues, thin sets or grouting. - Over all tile is more expensive when installed. Tile you can buy cheaper on average,on a per square foot basis, but when you factor in prep and setting materials on the average job, the s/f price gos up. Labor alone is approximately double per s/f for tile than it is for wood. Several factors can change this but the norm is tile can be almost double ( installed price) than hard wood. This all is when you have some one else install it. DIY can cut the price on tile way down , but over all still more expensive, Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar. GL

- I would highly recommend it (and Mike Holmes, the expert home builder on the DIY shows, also recommends porcelain). I had 12 sand-stone look porcelain tiles laid in my kitchen 3 years ago and I absolutely love the look and ease of cleaning. Mine are a reddish tan tone with a matter slightly textured surface that is not slippery. I had the installer use an almond tan sanded grout and then sealed the whole floor with two coats of sealer. It looks wonderfully elegant and is a snap to wipe up spills. If you are accustomed to vinyl flooring you will have to get used to the fact that anything you drop on porcelain is going to break (like a dish or a jar of tomato sauce) -- there is no bounce effect like with vinyl. But that is the only drawback. In fact, I like this flooring so much I plan to do my basement bathroom, den and outdoor porch in porcelain tile as well.
