- Q:Firstly, I realize that the 1000 paper crane thing is based on faith and not science. I'm not stupid. Secondly, Do the 1000 cranes have to be in the same place? If I send one of my cranes to a friend across the country, would that no longer count as part of my 1000 cranes?If a crane gets destroyed, must I start over or replace that crane?If anyone has any knowledge or link pertaining to the 1000 paper crane myth, please post it. - Q:if the crane starts out at ground level and the skyscraper is being built next to it, how does the crane get moved to the top of the building once the skyscraper has been built to the level of the top of the crane? (eg: the crane can reach a height of 30 stories but the building being const. is 100 stories)
- It is usually self-hoisting. There is motor and gear assenbly that lifts the crane within the tube (usually a future elevator shaft) the is constructed around it. Then it is bolted down and goes back to work.
- Q:Is there anything similar to the traditon where you fold 1000 origami cranes and you get a wish?
- The 1000 paper cranes thing really only became popular after the 2nd world war- a girl in Japan was told she woudl have a wish granted if she did it in a lifetime. She had been a victim of hiroshima (or nagasaki, i forget), so she gave it a shot but ended up dying young from the illness before she reached her quota. The point is, if it does exist in other cultures, it'll likely only be a surface similarity, I'd imagine. I remember reading in a children's book once that every leaf you catch from a tree in the fall before it touches the ground counts as a day's good luck... but i dont know if that's an actual superstition or one made up for the story. I can't remember the name of it either...

- No, it's not. First, the collective noun for cranes—its term of venery—is either herd or sedge, not flock. Second, the sound a crane makes is a whoop, or when not a whoop but a rattling sound, it is a bulge, not a shout.

- First you need an opportunity to operate a Gantry Crane, then you will to to get a crane operator license. Finally, you need to find a company who needs a Gantry Crane operator, but if you have located the first step, then you have found someone.

- Old Man Dirt is right. Block and tackle. Remember too those early engines weren't that heavy. The most common type from 1850 to the 1890s was the 4-4-0. They, and the other types were usually between 25 and 60 tons. I don't necessarily collect old rail photos, but I've seen many hundreds in other people's collections. And early locomotive salvage was usually block and tackle, with another engine brought in to furnish the muscle required. Since this could be a lengthy process if the wreck was extensive, a temporary track, or sometimes called a shoo-fly would be built to move trains past the derailment, or to enable getting another engine and hoisting equipment positioned.
