- Q:I think my water pump is going bad but figure id ask everyone to see what they thought. I leak coolant like the first 20 min i drive my truck and then it will seal itself up for the next day or two then start leaking again. It is getting leaked all over the belt and the fan is spraying it all around so you cant tell where exactly its coming from but i checked all the hoses and they are good and im pretty sure its not the radiator. Also, when it is leaking there is a loud whining noise when my trucks on and i heard that can be from the pump too.

- Q:How do you measure and analyse the pump characteristics and efficiency?
- An automotive water pump consists of a steel shaft with an impeller (like a steamboat paddle wheel) on one end and a pulley flange on the other. The shaft spins on bearings located in a cast iron or aluminum housing. The housing has internal passages to allow the water to enter the impeller cavity and exit, often to a tube like structure (part of the housing casting) to which one of the rubber radiator hoses attaches. How it works is simple. Water present in the impeller cavity is confined and pushed to the outlet by the rotating vanes of the impeller. The rotation of the pump is usually driven by a belt powered by a pulley on the engine which turns a second pulley mounted to the pumps pulley flange. The characteristics might include things like, is the pump self priming or is it self lubricating? In an automotive system the answer to both questions is yes. To evaluate a pumps efficiency you would want to set up a test rig where you attach the pumps outlet to a long hose and use it to fill a calibrated container (one gallon, five gallons etc). Then with a stopwatch you can either time how long it takes to fill a gallon container or you can measure the volume of water pumped in a minute. Either way you will get useful information you can use to evaluate the pumps efficiency. You should repeat the above test at different engine RPM's to discover if the pump has peak efficiency (or lack of efficiency) at a particular RPM or range of RPM's. Finally, if you do this experiment for real be sure you add water as fast as you pump it out so you don't over heat the engine and damage it. Have fun.

- you have what is called a water logged tank!! that means you are not putting enough air into it to act as a pressure source for the water,, this makes the prsessure switch kick on and off constantly,, if you have a bladder in your tank you have to add air thru a bicycle like valve usually on top of the tank,, if no bladder then you have to drain all the water from the tank and then screw everything tight before you turn it on to refill with water!! the air in the tank will compress then!! or or pressure switch was not bled right!!!!

- What I do for chilling wort involves a copper tubing heat exchanger. I have (right now in fact) a coil of copper tubing immersed in my hot liquid and I pump cool water through the tubing. It would work just as well with a pot of salted ice water and your hot liquid being pushed through the copper tubing. The copper tubing is the semiflexible coils you can get at a home store for $20ish. You'd salt the ice for maximum cooling but start the pump before submersing the coils to keep your water from freezing in the pipe.
- Q:I want to put a water pump on a horse trough with the pump on the outside of the fence. There is a hose attachement at the bottom of the trough for the intake. - Q:I replaced the water pump on my 350 chevy small block with a new water pump and the thing is leaking out of the lower bolt hole on the passenger side. I was told to remove the bolt and coat it with permatex hi tack gasket sealer and reinstall it Any how I'm wondering why there would be a leak there in the first place, any ideas?
- Remove the new pump and gasket. Reclean the steel surface and remove any pieces of the old gasket that might still be attached. That surface needs to be perfect. Apply the recommended sealer after this is done . Either a sealer or anti-sieze compound should be added to the threads. Recheck surface of new pump for any flaws and reinstall. Bolt in a criss -cross pattern and tighten equally , partially tight first and then all of them fully tight.
