- Q:My fiance's 2002 Cougar is overheating and we can't seem to diagnose the problem. As soon as she touches the gas pedal, the meter shoots to quot;Hquot;, but when we sit at a red light, it returns to center. I tried googling a few things and I've gotten a few things about the water pump, but I know next to nothing about cars. Where is it so I can look at it and feel dumb about STILL not being able to do anything? =D
- Leave the water pump alone! It sounds to me like your gauge is malfunctioning. Every so often an electrical gauge will fail and give strange readings. It could either be the sensor that reads your coolant temp or the gauge body itself. Your car cannot go from overheating to fine while stationary at a red light. Take it to a shop (that specializes in electrical, they're out there) and tell them the temp gauge is acting wacky. If you INSIST to know the location of your water pump...should be on the passenger side of the car mounted to the engine. It's either driven by an accessory belt or the timing belt, I can't remember at the moment. Here's a trick also. Water pumps are designed to leak when they fail. See if you can find coolant spilling out of anywhere a few ounces at a time. Good luck!

- How To Prime A Pump: (Need: Gallon jug of drinking water, a roll of teflon tape, and an adjustable wrench or a pipe wrench.) A. Unplug pump (or cut OFF breaker box at pump, if one). B. Unscrew (counter-clockwise) the largest (3/4) plug on top of pump head. C. Wrap 2-3 flat turns (clockwise only) of teflon tape on threads of plug. D. Pour water into plug hole until full, and quickly start threads of plug by hand. E. Plug in or turn on pump, and finger-tighten plug (air and water will bubble out around threads as you do so) until pump picks up prime. Then wrench-tighten plug when it does. Repeat all steps, if necessary, until you have full water pressure and pump cuts off on its own. Good Luck!

- If you need a timing belt then to keep from having to replace the water pump later and paying for the repair twice then it is just good practice to replace the water pump at the same time. However, the 550.00 sounds a bit high to replace both.

- Q:I need to get my water pump replaced because it is cracked, a coolant flush and my belt is dry. I went to pep boys because my check engine light came on.They want to charge me 950 for the job. - Q:i took off the water pump cover on my 1986 cr 250 and discovered that the impeller wont come off. ive tried turnig it the wrong way and the right way. can someone please tell me how to get it off.
- Remove the water pump cover, Now you will see the impeller and it has a little 10 mm(I think) nut fitting on it. Put the bike in gear and apply the rear brake. Now unscrew the impeller with a socket wrench. Take it easy as they are quite soft. Once that is off, you should be able to pry the seal out, and pop a new one in. A good way to get old seals out is to use a screw, screw it in to the seal then grab it with the pliers. You might want to replace the oil seal while you are there since they are so cheap. To do this though you will have to remove the rh crank case cover cause this seal sits in the inside of this cover. This is also an easy job. When you remove the rh crank case cover ( with impeller already removed) the water pump shaft should just slide out from the inside and give you easy access to both seals.

- The first answer gave good advice. On older cars replacing a water pump was easy. You loosened the fan belt, removed it and removed the pump with the fan blades. Now nearly all autos have air conditioning and there is not enough room without removing some of the items associated with it. I have on occasion even had to remove the radiator before air became popular. Shop around for an independent mechanic or a small shop. The job will be more than you want to try probably. Good luck.

- It's better not to start directly. It's a great test for your motor and contactor. Do a star three start, conditional on doing a star three plus autotransformer start, reducing the starting current. Reduce future maintenance costs. Since do not think about every day to do pump repair.

- If this is a well you are talking about, it may be a faulty pressure switch for a start from kicking on to often, and also it sounds as thou you don't have enough air in your tank not leaving enough air pressure so your pump kicks on too soon, and shuts off to soon. Check your pressure switch, and drain your tank completely, and see if that works. You will have some air at first, but it will stop in time. Your tank also needs to be in the right position as well keeping the right amount of air in it. Sounds like your pump motor still may be OK. One more thing, check to see if your check valve is shot.
