Q:home decoration advice : what to do with wasted wall tiles?
Give them to the local school for art and craft. Keep some for spares though.
Q:Decoration tiles how to choose
Q:Which tiles are better for Indian homes?
I ve worked with tiles for over 20 years and I find no difference in tiles from different areas such a Italian , Indian .USA, Brazil, China etc. They all have excellent and garbage tiles. The vitrified tiles is a type of tile as is ceramic and porcelains. Usually a bit harder bodied and the the sizing is better on vitrified tiles. Get what coloring and style fits your needs. You have any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
Q:When to use sheetrock for tile?
You never use a sheetrock to do tile. Only as a normal wall covering to be painted in a non wet area such as a back splash or a wainscot. Then that you can tile over. You may have used a product ( or one similar) called Denshield. This is a 1/2 special backer board you can use on floors and you work with it just like a sheet rock. because it was a light weight fiberglass impregnated gypsum board. Just like the 1/2 cement board you could use it on floors and wall where moisture is present and you installed it in a thinset bed of mortar prior to nailing it down. Sheet rock is a general term for dry wall, used for regular walls to be painted. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
Q:Tiling shower ceiling?
cut kickers, or braces, to hold them. i.e. 1x2 pine sticks are sufficient. cut to estimated lenght, usually 1/8 to 1/2 inch longer. counter tops, and solid step benchs help limit material used in this way. also once placed, kickers can be shared, by placing at edges of tile to hold two to four (corners) at once.
Q:Tiling bathroom please help!?!?!??
Bnose tile is a new simplified way of doing tile and was to remove one of the grout edges. So all you have to do is grout the top like they did in the old days a few years ago. You could also use a thin lat of flat trim, a brass or stainless steel edging, or caulking that matches the wall or tile. I think the simple grout is your best bet. PS. Where corners meet If the tile is same color through they can show. If it is glazed colored or just a thin color on top then no. In that case cut the tile back so that they do not quite reach the corner. Then there will be a slight inverted corner where you will grout or caulk. In neither case would you want to miter the corner. It will be too sharp and thin corners would be weak enough to chip.
Q:Ceramic tile??
It wouldn't hold up very well if you put it right on top of the vinyl floor, but if you screw down some thin wonder board it would work just fine. If you are tiling the kitchen or bathroom you run into problems with raising the floor such as doors not opening and appliances being raised above the counter tops. And if you tile in front of the appliances it will be a pain to get them out if you ever needed to replace them (dishwasher)
Q:laying ceramic tiles?
Kat and Kevin, It is not absolutely critical to put down material over the plywood before tiling. It's just better to do so. Nowadays, most people use backer board on top of the plywood. This is because backer board doesn't shrink or swell due to changes in moisture content. However, I've seen and done tiling directly over plywood in the past. This is done when customers are on a strict budget. In most homes built with plywood sub floors, tar paper is usually used between the two layers of plywood sub flooring. This acts as a moisture barrier and prevents the bottom layer and floor joists from being exposed to moisture. (I have seen tiling work done directly over plywood and it has lasted, without cracks in the gout, for 20 years). Having said that, it's best to lay down something like backer board. Increasing the height of your floor can be a problem with any addition to the plywood sub floor. Sometimes doors or other items can be affected by the increased height. You can also use different thicknesses of backer board to prevent too much height, while still using the board.
Q:Why do you trowel thinset when laying tile?
Thinset cements the tile to the subfloor. The settling depends on the tile, and whether or not you press it down.
Q:discontinued vinyl tile, what are my options?
Vinyl tiles are very cheap, maybe you should consider redoing the entire kitchen floor instead of trying to match up discontinued tiles. But I know that if you bring a vinyl piece into a flooring store, they will try to match it the best as possible, and give you something very similar. Re-doing your kitchen floor with new vinyl won't cost much, and it's what I suggest.
