- I prefer having tile to not having tile for the wow factor. But generally it is more expensive than people realize to have it done right. But I don't see what you talking about for practicality issues. Tiling doesn't waterproof a surface. If you apply tile over OSB, you will have toxic mold in one month. If you apply cement board directly over studs and then tile, you will have toxic levels of mold on the studs within a year. If you want waterproofing you have to install it into your tile setup.

- i am more familiar with tiles falling off the wall. but yours are glued on so good they wont fall. The wall must be warping from water or steam and heat and the tiles wont bend with it so they crack.

- Q:We are planning small home improvements during the next year to prepare our house for sale. I would like to switch out our 4 year old formica countertop and replace it with granite tile. A slab is out of the question due to cost. We have a small kitchen and would need about 40 tiles. When I looked on the internet for costs, it seems I can get these tiles for under $300.00? - That's the most efficient way to do it. You use math to calculate positions, so the tiles are virtual. Unless you really need to draw tiles with boundaries, don't show them (like the original Warcraft game). Perform all of your calculations like movement and clicks-to-tile conversions based on pixel location. This is far more efficient that trying to do it with lots of actual Java subpanels merged together. But, note that it's a lot of work and you have to carefully work out your calculations to make sure your clicks are aligned correctly. One mistake I made with a hex map once was I used doubles and I casted them to integers too early, and the slight different (by losing percentage) threw all my calculations off slightly. The trick is to create your background image tiles so that they blend seamlessly together on all sides. That will take a LOT of effort.

- Chipboard is not a suitable underlay for tile. Check the bag of mortar for acceptable substrates, at the very minimum you will need a tile backer. If there is any deflection in the chipboard I would recommend putting plywood down before using tile backer. Remember that tile backers don't add much strength as far as flexing is concerned, they are used so the underlayment has a similar expansion and contraction rate as the tile itself. Wood will not give you this and cracks will develop over time.
