- Q:how to install wood floors?
- We had a 12' x 14' room that had a horseshoe pattern that was out by 3/4. I ripped 2 x 4's at an angle to create 6' long shims, so the shims were 2 (1-1/2) wide x 3/4 to feathering out to nothing x 6' long . We had removed the old carpet so all we had was the original floor sheathing. I then screwed the shims down to the floor joists and used a pour in leveling compound to fill in between the shims. Let it dry a couple days and laid laminate over the top. If you use a pour in leveler any little holes or around floor ducts you will need to seal up so the leveler does not flow through. I happen to ruin a ironing board & iron that was in our basement because it leaked through, didn't find it until the next day!!
- Q:All my boards are in 3ft lengths. Do I need to cut them to various lengths before starting? What lengths should I cut them in? Does it look weird having a 3ft borad then a 8 inch board? Please help!

- Real wood floors are thick, they can be refinished many times, of course you won't live that long. Engineered wood floors can be refinished a few times, and is all you need. Laminate floors, can not be refinished...When they start looking tacky (8-10 yrs) you replace them or carpet over top. If you are going to keep your house, go for real wood or engineered floors, and before you buy, Ask about the refinishing angle, just to make sure.
- Q:The guy I hired says its better to glue and nail the very expensive engineered hardwood flooring I just bought. The store that I purchased it from says that you should either nail or glue and not do both. This concerns me and if any of you are installers please let me know what the disadvantage of doing it this way, the handyman I hired already installed the floors this way in two of the rooms and is working on the rest of the house soon, I want to do it the right way. Everytime I question him, he tells me he's been in this business for 25 years, and gives me this tone to not question him.
- The best thing to do is nail it on a wood subfloor. Put about a 30-pound tar paper between the flooring and the subfloor for moisture protection, sound dampening, and less fatigue when walking on it. Before you put the flooring down, walk around and check for squeaks in the subfloor. If you find any, you can either use long screws to secure the subfloor to the floor joists, or crawl under the house, pry up the subfloor a bit, and squirt some white glue into the crack that's causing the squeak. Then screw the floorboard back into place. You should only really glue a wood floor down if the subfloor is a slab. And, I wouldn't recommend doing it yourself unless you're really skilled with a compound mitre saw. Cuts will have to be precise and straight. You'll also need a special floor nailer and the nails have to bgo in precisely (in the tongue of the tonge and groove joint, at an angle so it doesn't interfere with the joint). Also, you should at least check with someone who has installed floors as to what direction the planks should go, where to start, how to get random lengths and colors (or grains), etc. Too many floors get really screwed up by people installing them who don't know what they're doing. .

- You said new home. If it is new and not just new to you, it should have a builders warranty for one year. The floors would be covered under this. The reason they peeked has been covered above.

- I would check with the manufacturer. You could use wood filler to match, but I think there is probably a product or system better suited directly from the manufacturer. Or, just call it character! lol.

- In general terms Engineered hardwood fooring is pretty much better compared to 100% hardwood floors. 1. Stability: Instability of solid wood is mainly affected by moisture and heat, wherein it could warp, swell and split apart. none of these problems is present in the engineered wood. Therefore these said set back experienced by building contractors were very much taken cared off by manufacturers of this said simulated wood. 2. Aesthetics: Engineered wood uses also real wood veneers and produces same effect than real hard wood with a very hard finish designed for heavy traffic,Personal opinion: True hard wood is very expensive and requires skilled work in order to attain a desired effect. BUT......... If you have money to burn ... Use true solid wood wherein you could see a big difference in ELEGANCE and BEAUTY of a real wood.Much more joints could be SEAMLESS compared to engineered wood because it comes in panels with the tongue and groove connection.
