6. What's the characteristics about porcelain tiles and glazed tiles? Which one
more slippery, more aesthetically pleasing and easy to clean?
Glazed tiles are colorful, the effect is rather diverse, stain-slip, abrasion resistance but worse than the porcelain tiles. Long-term use may wear a large surface; porcelain tiles have the higher degree, long hard wear surface. Good performance and stable cleanup (before playing the best times to use the wax to improve stain resistance). The porcelain tiles are weaker performance in non-slip than glazed tiles. We should take attention on its anti-slip properties, face down in a tiled brick water testing.
7. How to choose bathroom tiles? Porcelain tiles or glazed tiles?
Currently used in the bathroom tiles with glazed tiles (mainly from price considerations, some high-end can choose tiles, notice to choose tiles), divided into Shinny and Matt two kinds. Light color makes people feel shinny, but the bathroom more appropriate to create a warm feeling, so the best choose is uses matte, the shinny feels more soft and not dazzling.
- Q:I‘m having a small bathroom remodled. The floor isn‘t perfectly rectangular, there are some uneven areas because of the tub. I would like the opinion of a profession tiler (should there be one put there, somewhere)...should the floor tiles always be centered, or start lined up against a wall? Also, should the grout be completely dry before sealing it? Thanks.
- Yes the tiles need to be centered ,but always dry lay them out to see what size cut you ll be getting at the walls left to right. If you end up with less than a 1/2 tile, shift tile over 1/2 of a tile at the center, this gives you a bigger side cut. I personally like to do a whole tile starting at the door way,I just think this is a better look , but there again you can start in the middle and dry lay them out. As far as sealing grout read directions on your particular sealer. Most silicone based sealers need the grout to cure for 30 days. Penetrating sealers ( which I suggest) take only a 72 ( 3 day) cure time. Silicone sealers wont last as long and need resealing based on your usage and what you clean with. - Q:can you use marble tile for counter top
- Counter Top. Marble tiles (although expensive) crack w/in time. Luckily they now have imatation marbel tiles. You should look into them.
- Q:Can I paint over the tiles? If so what kind of products would I use and how would I prep the tiles?
- I wouldn't do it. You would either have to paint the grout, or put masking tape on the grout. Plus, as you point out, most paint won't stick to tile very well. There are some 2-part epoxy paints made for resurfacing sinks and tubs (white, almost always), but it's a fussy paint to work with, you need to prep the tile (sand it so it's not glossy), then mask the grout (probably). Edit: On 2nd thought, assuming the grout is white, you could also sand the tiles (for the paint to stick), and just paint using an oil-based primer. It will stick to the tile better than most paint. It might be a decent stop-gap until you have time to re-tile.
- Q:We are buying our first home and want to do some updating but are on a budget. We are not experienced in do-it-yourself home projects but would like to try.How simple or how difficult is installing carpet tiles? We know nothing about them really.
- you can do it- just follow instructions. When I was a kid we garbage picked the carpet stores for left over remnants- any size. When we had enough we took them to the basement and randomly glued them to the floor for a patchwork design. If a kid can glue carpet down- so can you.
- Q:Hi Folks,Currently I have a bath tub with a vinyl shower surround. I‘m considering removing the shower surround and replacing it with tile.I‘m just wondering how big of a job this is? I‘ve never tiled before but consider myself handy and have done plenty around the house.Of note, I don‘t believe proper backboard is underneath the surround so I‘d have to put that up also. I‘ve put drywall up in the past so I think that part should be ok.So...is this a do it yourself job? Or is this something that needs to be hired out for. Seems like it should be simple, but maybe I‘m missing something and it gets complicated or difficult to make come out nice?Also, how long should this take if I did it myself (days and hours per day) and how long before I can start using the shower again.Thanks!
- I, too, have a shower that needs tiling. I hired a friend of a friend and he began the job and abandoned it 1/5 along the way. One of the problems you may encounter is that you will have to have the proper equipment to cut the tile that goes around the shower head, etc. Also, this guy started from the top and I was told that you always start from the bottom of the shower. There is a certain type of adhesive that you need also for adhering the tile (forgot the name) but it is not thinset. Make sure you measure twice so when you cut you will only have to cut once. Oh yeah, and don't forget your spacers. You tile one day and grout the next. I think the grout needs 48 hours to totally dry. That's all I can think of.
- Q:Is there a site you know that would be helpful for this. I am going to be doingthe kitchen walls, no back splash from counter. Tile will start at counter go up to bottom of cabinets.I was thinking of using a regular tile then half way up putting a 6 inch strip of glass tile, they are smaller really add SPUNK! lol I need some pointers on doing it though. - With no offense to others who answer, nor to you, certainly WEB SITES may help,,, as well as one who answered concrete backer board. After installing thousands of sq. ft. of tile I have some thoughts. Not wondering at all about your design, which is totally up to each individual, you'll need to know the basics of hanging tile on a verticle surface. While realizing that a verticle surface defines Shear weight as it relates to tile, you'll certainly need spacers for grout lines, a decent rapid set mortar, etc. You don't state the size of the tiles? 4 inch? 6 inch? I also wonder what your counter surface is now, and the backsplash issue? The backer board offers a surface more likely to accept mortar in its texture, holding it better than drywall, and certainly offers more durability with regard to a kitchen,,,or bath, in its water resistance issues. Many small tile sections, IE: 1 inch/ 2 inch are usually mesh paper backed to help them stay in a predetermined place in spacing. The task is only different in that you're battling the natural laws of physics and gravity when you apply tile to a verticle surface. I offer this then leave you to ponder. NEVER extend yourself or any job, farther than can be managed without error, or having to lay a pile of bricks against a wall to hold up newly installed tile. Knowledge is usually something we acquire AFTER we NEED it, and Patience is truly a virtue in this case for a DIY. Steven Wolf (The Rev.)

- You did not say how big the bathroom was and that is important in deciding what size tile to use... You said layng ceramic tile... you did not say if it was ON the floor or ON the wall behind the vanity top and that makes a difference. I would love to answer as I have just completed another job in my bathroom this week ... but I just do not have enough information from you
- Q:If you butt the all the tiles without any spacing, will the tile crack or bubble up due the expand and contract?
- as was mentioned the grout lines help to allow for small or large diferences in size. The grout also makes the seal between the tile to keep water from leaking between.
- Q:I want 12x12 tiles on the floor of the bathroom. But on the countertop (small, less than 6sqt) should I do large tiles, or smaller tiles of a similar style? And for the backsplash, should it be the same as the counter or the floor? Not so good with the design aspect. :)
- All your tile selections should co-ordinate but do not need to match exactly. I like the big tiles on the floor but not on the counters and back splash. The large tile will make those areas seem out of scale. I'd go with a similar tile but in a smaller size on the counter and back splash and see if you can find some accent tile to work into your design of the back splash. All it takes is a band of something like natural stone, glass tile or a textured tile to kick it up a notch and by using the more expensive tile sparingly, you're not increasing your costs but certainly increasing the eye appeal.
