- Q:For a while now I have just used paper towels as a substrate for my 2 leopard geckos and I recently have been researching slate tiles as a substrate and I want to give it a try due to the positive feedback i‘ve seen on message boards and care sheets. Now, I have 2 10 gallon tanks that I would like to use but details are lacking from an online source.1. What measurements should i ask for when getting a piece of slate cut(for a generic 10 gallon tank)?2. Is there a certain thickness the slate should be for proper heat disbursement?3. How warm should the slate be allowed to get if i‘m monitoring it with a thermometer? I know I could measure out the tank myself, but I was just curious if there was a size that fit better than what a measurement would give me. Thank you for the feedback.
- I use slate tiles for my 3 geckos tanks. They work great. 1. A 10 gallon tank is generally 20in X 12in. Because not all the tiles are the same size I would go with cutting the tile slightly smaller to make sure they fit. So maybe 19 1/2 and 11 1/2. You will probably need 2 tiles for each tank so you could cut them anyway you want ( 10 and 10, 12 and 8, 6 and 6, etc. You can fill the gaps with sand later on. The 12 X12 tiles could be slightly smaller, slightly larger, or longer then they say. 2. No really, though you do want them to be fairly even in the tank. Most of my tiles are about 1/4 inch but I also have a layer of sand under the tiles so they are level even if the tiles are different thicknesses. 3. You want them to be warm but not too hot. Because leopard geckos use belly heat you'll want them about 88-90F. I would not let the tiles get over 95F though.

- No. the moisture will soften the joint compound, Buy Flashpatch or Dashpatch, both are floor patching products. Not one knowledgeable answer in all the previous answers. Why do these people who lack any know-how attempt to mislead?
- Q:We purchased a 12 year old house and some of the ceramic floor tiles are cracked and need to be replaced. Where can you find old ceramic tile patterns? Do I have to replace the entire area?
- If you can get one tile to carry as your sample, then check stores that sell tiles. Doubt you will find them. Best bet is take sample to store that specializes in tile; they MAY have outdated tiles in their warehouse. Dig out some from area that could use contrast colors. Use pulled up ones (extra work to 'clean' back of old tiles) and replace the cracked/broken tiles. Use contrasting tiles around visible outside wall border or center of area. Now have 2 different colors but not replacing entire floor.

- Q:Can I also use thin set to grout my tiles on counter? I‘m using white glazed ceramic tiles 4x4. If not what should I use? Please help
- Thin set is used only for setting or adhering the tiles to your substrate. If its just a basic, white , soft bodied 4x4 Unsanded grout must be used. The sand (in thin set) and the small joint used will not adhere properly and shrink and fall out. Unsanded is made to get down into the joints.The sand in thin set is more of a silica sand. If its a a hard bodied tile and is a bit thicker than a standard tile a bigger joint and sanded grout must be used. Thats 1/8 to 1/2 joint size. There is more sand and the bigger joint will adhere and not shrink ( if the proper amount of water is used in the grout) and will harden just as a cement based product should. - Q:hi friends.. we r constructing a new house.. many people say us lay tiles for floorins and many say to use marbles or granite?...so confused!!!!.. wat to do?quite big house situated quite beneath the hills.
- Tile is much better suited for floors. It is harder and less likely to stain or scratch. Granite is the next best choice because it is harder than marble and less porous and likely to stain. Marble is the softer and most likely to stain. The first floor of our current house is all ceramic tile.
- Q:The ceramic tile in my shower is looking really shabby and I‘d like to re-do it in subway tiles on the walls and mini hexagonal tiles on the floor. Has anyone ever re-tiled an old shower? What should I keep in mind? It is a single story house that is about 30 years old and I beleive it is all the original stuff.
- Depending on your budget I would consider having them professionally refinished. They can do a great job and even change the color. But, if you want to tear them out you will have to install new backerboard(like concreate, called hardiboard). It can be very tedious and time consuming, you'll also need to rent a wet saw to cut the tiles. It will also be very messy and your bathroom will be out of comission for a few sayd if you are doing the work yourself, so I hope you have 2.
- Q:I have a small bathroom (toilet only) that has carpet that smells and I want to replace it with 12 X 12 inch tiles. Is there a type of tile that will make the installation simple (avoid grout) and is easy to cut and easy to installHigher quality but simple installation is desired.
- Sorry , like T J said all tile needs grout. Dirt and debris will collect down in the groves if you dont.. Have you thought of a good laminate that has the tile look? Just need a skil saw or table saw (best ) to cut them. they can.Since it classified as a non wet area laminates will work fine in a 1/2 bath.. Less work putting them in too.
