Q:I am doing this project to find eco friendly alternatives for businesses. So how is electricity in it generated. Also.why is the pollution of water bad? I mean i realize that it kills marine life, and it affects biodiversity, but how does it affect the wold, or even us humans???

Many modern cruise ships use a combination gas and steam power or COGAS plant to produce electric power. Much like you cars alternator in your car it converts other power sources into electricity. Unlike you car though the COGAS system does not directly power the ship but sends the electricity to electric turbines for propulsion and also provides the rest of the ship with electric power. The human body uses about 10 cups of water each day. No matter how it regains this water ( liquid or solid ) all these sources get it from nature. Contaminates in the water, though most tend to be filtered out, pass on to the food or water source that you get it from. Obviously, contaminates like weed killer use on a lawn, can contaminate rivers and streams causing other plants and animals to mutate and die. Though much has been done to keep contaminated water from reaching humans in more recent times some still make it through the filtering systems. Contaminated water has been found to be main contributing factors in plagues, cancer, mutations, as well as other things in humans. I hope this helps.

Q:I have a van and wish to kit it out with generator, welder and power tools. The genrator needs to cope with a 180amp rated welder plus 110v power tools (grinder, drill etc) being used at the same time. The generator needs to be diesel powered not petrol. The ones i've looked at are rated in Kva's. Not too sure how to work out how many Kva's i will require. Help please.

It will probably take something like 6.6 KVA's to run it. Similar one's take a 220 VAC, 30 amp circuit. The Model 180 MIG welds up to 1/4 steel. 6 heat settings and infinitely adjustable wire speed control welds a wider range. Max. output 160 amps with 30% duty cycle. Requires 220 Volts 60 cycle 30-amp circuit.

Q:I would like to find out if a product exists which permits remotely using a mechanical switch to power cycle a diesel generator. Maybe one that has an IP which I could connect to or uses RF. Literally just turn on/off the power without interacting with it physically.

Should be doable, except I can see a problem - How will you know if the thing started or not ??

Q:I have a 1992 chevy 250 with a 6.5 turbo diesel, I have built a hydrogen generator for it that produces 2lt./min. but do not know how to hook it to the truck or where before or after the turbo.

You should hook it up before the turbo. After the turbo is pressurized which will make it hard to feed the gas in.

Q:i need a generator that can be continually run for years it needs to be able to easlly provide enough power for five one person cabinsi am going to use this to power a camp so it needs to withstand the outdoor elements i am looking for a brand name and an approximate costthank you to all who answer

what you need to do is run that generator with a quality diesel engine and you need to get some commercial companies to advise you the power, amps, and you will need to have some time off the line so your refrigeration will need to be of good quality to stay cold for 5/6 hours while people sleep --- or else you need to have an excellent muffler system for that power plant you probably need to figure how to have some farming so you get the farm discount on the fuel .

Q:Do you have more insights into this? Japan builds great cars, machinery, tools and high-tech products. Their bullet train is known for almost zero delays in decades. Yet with the Fukushima nuclear power station we have flawed tsunami protection in a location known for powerful earthquakes and tsunamis for at least centuries. I guess no one should be surprised by a ca. 50 feet tsunami at that location. It looks to me like such an obvious blunder. Am I mistaken? - And I mean no offense to the great people of Japan who so valiantly dealt with the terrible tsunami crisis that I admire this very much. Thank you.

Q:I own a 2300 square foot home with an upstairs and downstairs heatpump. If I wanted to buy a generator to use in the event my power went down what size should I shoot for. I would like to be able at a minimum to provide upstairs heat (1000 square feet), maintain the fridge and provide minimal light at night. Basic survival type stuff. Also how much fuel would normally be consumed running for 24 hours?Thanks I know this is vague so generalities are fine.

Don't go for the smallest you can get away with. A small unit straining can use as much fuel as a better unit loafing and you may need more power for tools, battery chargers, hair curlers, etc. Women will not be denied their comforts. Are we tallkng a portable unit? With a heatpump I would like a 10-12 kw minimum and a 20 kw with an automatic switch with tied to the main panel for two heatpumps and complete comfort. Since the heatpumps need more power to start than when running I like to add a delay timer to one of the air units so they don't start up at the same time when the gen-set kicks on. An often overlooked consideration is fuel source. Think about your area and what might become scarce or troublesome to get like fuel station lines and shortages, wasting one fuel to go get another and poor weather or travel conditions. In my area, no matter how bad the disaster, natural gas to the house was always working so that's what I recommend. Propane is another option for longer run times and alternative cooking fuel but that entails an on site storage tank. Propane stores well and, along with natural gas, won't gum up the lines or require stabilizing like gas or diesel fuel. Good luck

Q:I just learned there are 2 cycle diesel engines.What machines use them?Also,Why does Jeep still use an in-line 6 cylinder as opposed to a V-6?

Detroit diesel used 2 cycle engines in the 50's and up. They may still use them, I'm not sure. 2 cycle engines does not always mean you mix oil in the fuel. It means the engine fires every stroke, not every other stroke, (4cycle engines) The most common series I'm familiar with is the 53 and 71 series.

Well, unless you're supplying a purely resistive load (nothing but filament lamps and radiant heaters -- no motors, transformers, switched-mode supplies or fluorescent lamps), you generally need a generator rated for about 1.2 to 1.5 times as many kVA as you have kilowatts. So in your case, a couple of megaVA.

Q:Aside from the fact that they just had a massive natural disaster and there resources are stretched to say the least, what is main reason they cant get the reactor under control?From what I've heard it's not receiving enough power to maintain cooling system so it can maintain controlled fission.In my limited understanding it seems the plant survived relatively unscathed other than there diesel generators being flooded/destroyed. The plant is currently on battery backup's which I assume are relatively large and cant just be switched out to maintain the cooling system. Is it just an issue of supplying enough power for the cooling system? Couldn't they park the the USS Ronald Reagan off shore there and borrow some power until stabilized, considering you could power a sizable city off its reactor?

the tidal wave was created by a nuke detonated in the ocean. They might have had a bomb inside the nuke plant. Now think of tidal waves and attacks against nuclear plants. If a whole nuke plant goes up you'll have nothing over 1,000 mile radius. It's time to close these plants.
