Q:For anyone well up on EMD E and F units: saw a rather frightful picture last night of an F unit slamming into a switcher. not pretty ofcourse. it was on a curve so the F unit fell to her side to the outside of the curve. but not before breaking in half right behind the cab. the picture caption remarked that this was a common feature of the Es and Fs. By design? for safety? or design flaw? first time id seen this type of damage to an F, and certainly have never heard this comment of them. can someone clarify please? Couple days ago i was doing some reminiscing of railfanning way back in the day. i was fondly thinking of the great time i had with the crews. got to thinking about more of the details. all the stuff they had shown me. then something popped into my head. torpedoes! back then, scary lil devices to me! but rightlyfully so. so while im here in questions, are track torpedoes still used (when needed)? are they still around? havent seen one in quite along time since ive thought about it.thank you!
I seem to recall a reference in Trains stating that these were designed to buckle right behind the cab in order to protect the crew in cases of head-on collisions. Apparently, the buckling was intended to absorb energy that otherwise might crush the cab. I can see how the buckling might appear to be a design flaw in the form of a weakness in the frame that allows the buckling. But my understanding is that it was an intentional design feature, kind of like how a fuse is the weakest link for the purpose of protecting the rest of the circuit.
Q:I want to buy a GENMAX HY6500 GENERATOR FOR 220/240 VOLTS but is wondering if this generator is good. I saw one sold at $1,239 and on another site it was $299.00. I was adviced not to buy Wolf power because of poor customer ratings. I haven't seen any customer rating for GENMAX. I guess this is a Chinese company.The problem I am having in US is that I canot get a 50hz 220-240 volt generators. All I get is 60hz and I am told thy wouldn't work for Africa. Can anybody help?
You can probably get them in Africa proper, and at a better price too, with local support included, minus the shipping cost. When buying a portable generator, check which fuel it uses. Diesel engines last much longer than gasoline. Also, these units are not made to run continuously, but only for emergency or temporary power.and must run isolated from the regular power network. If you want to run more than one and have a small power plant, you need stationary units and a synchronizing panel, with circuit breakers etc. .
Q:I want to know if someone put gasoline instead of diesel in my generator. I'm use to seeing dark yellow fuel in it and now the muffler is red hot
They may have put gas in it. Drain it all out and put in diesel. Get the off road stuff with the red dye and then you will be able to tell better next time. Also get a locking cap so that only you can get into the tank.

Very simple. You need an electric motor of the same wattage as you need to generate. You will need to spin the motor a little faster than the rated RPM of the motor. (pick your pulleys carefully) Hook a small load up to the motor, spin it, hit it with a jolt of voltage. (try your 12 volt battery)It should start to generate and you can hook up a bigger load to it. Too simple? Try it.
Q:I live in a location without municipal water supply. I could buy a natural gas generator, and hire an electrician to connect it to my breaker box, but I believe there is a way to connect solar panels to a battery system to provide enough power for my 220 volts submerged pump. For that heavy a load, I'd think that a gasoline or diesel generator might be more appropriate. While you could possibly set up a bank of solar-charged batteries to power a 220-volt inverter, the power requirements could make that approach cost-prohibitive.

B: Magnetic Field. Theta: is the angle between the velocity vector and magnetic field vector (angle between v B). So if the current is in the same direction as the magnetic field, the angle between (v B) is zero or 180 degrees making sin(theta)0 which means F0 It experiences a force only when the current is perpendicular to the magnetic field or at least makes an angle theta with the field that is not zero or 180. what this means is there has to be a velocity component normal to the magnetic field.

you need to drain tank, and flush it out, if you do get it to run like it is it will smoke, foul spark plug and the diesel fuel will destroy the gaskets on carb, and also contaminate the oil, remove tank and flush it out before you try to start it
Q:I have been given a cheap diesel generator made from china. It starts alright, but seems to be reving very high and poping and spitting until it has ran for a while. It surges some times as well. I don't really like it much and haven't used it to power anything other then to load test it a bit. I have checked the motor and all it has is a simple governor on it with no adjustments? So what did you want to do with this engine? It sounds like a stationary engine used to power a generator or pump or similar application at a constant RPM.

You need to google. Try looking up: 1/ The energy density of diesel fuel oil. 2/ The efficiency of a diesel internal combustion engine. 3/ The efficiency of a dynamo (alternator or electrical generator not turbine). Chuck in a bit of ineffieiency for the linkage between the ICE and the dynamo. Then just multiply the energy density of the fuel, by the efficiencies, and out will pop your answer.
