Q:I don't see why I couldn't use my car's engine as a power generator. I would only need maybe 1000 watts. The car is a 1990 Ford F350 diesel.

The easiest would be to get a heavy duty low-speed alternator (like used in police cars and cabs that spend a lot of time idling). It could put out over 1000 watts of 12 volt DC. Then get an invertor (DC-to-AC converter) rated for 1000 watts 120VAC output. If you are not using the alternator to make AC it will still do a great job on keeping your battery charged.

Q:I am looking for the stand by large generator 15-20kw (to use all the power on one transfer switch). The problem is that stand by generator require large propane tanks (expensive to install). I would like to find a stand by generator that i could run off gasoline and use all of it available power. I think this would the most economical solution. In case of propane/natural gas the cost of propane tank installation is significant. The diesel stand by generators are significantly more expensive. So far I have found tri-fuel13kw portable generator that has several outlets. In this case not all the power can be utilized.

Why do you need something that big? A 15kw gasoline generator is going to use 2-3 gallons per hour fully loaded and close to 1 gallon per hour at light load, and a 20 even more than that, hence you might not have to have a large propane tank but you will have a large gasoline tank. That is enough capacity to run a clothes dryer, water heater, and range (all electric of course) all at the same time. I personally got one of the Chinese 2 stroke 800w generators, its KWH per gallon performance is poor but in the winter it will run my gas furnace just fine and it only needs to be run several hours per day to keep the place above freezing. I have some batteries and inverters for lighting and I can cook with a portable propane camping stove. Since gasoline doesn't store well without going bad you will have to rotate your stock of it probably by using multiple small cans or by having a big tank and using your supply in your car and getting more as needed. Propane in a leak-free tank will store indefinitely Diesel will also store long term by occasionally treating it with fungicide and keeping any water drained off the bottom. Natural gas is obviously just piped in.

Just about all the rings you purchase new today come pre-gapped to the correct tolerance, just like spark plugs. Way in the past, of course back then it was necessary to check the gap. With such a small engine 1/16 is plenty.

I also want to have at least enough food to live for 6 months for at least 25 people. I will also want a ton of water (not literately a ton). Also some sort of water purification system, ventilation, and a diesel generator.I only want to shovel out about 5 thousand of my own cash.Tell me about how many people i need, how to get them. Wow. Um, hang on. This is gonna take a while to write out. Okay. First, you need to have it all planned out before you can get people on board. Have a blueprint of the bomb shelter and explain how it will work. You should hire an architect or engineer for the floor plans. If it's 25 people then you could have 5 rooms with two bunk beds and a single in each. For air ventilation you could have heavy duty industrial air filters. For food, I would suggest those emergency buckets that have 200 meals in them (they sell them at Costco). You should also have a little farm and fish tank in there do constantly have food replensished. When you have it all planned out then you could put an ad in the paper, Craigslist, or just spread the word. Make sure you write up a contract. I can't believe I answered this.

Q:I can visually see the electronic speed actuator moving in and out when this is happening. Should I replace the actuator or could it be something else. This is in a boat.

There are several models of the 20K Westerbeke. Can you post up which model you have? It could be as simple as an adjustment. The actuators do not generally fail. However, if you have a lot of hours, say 2000, then the actuator spring may be worn out. Please post up your model and I will see what I can do. Also you can email me.
