Q:I am purchasing a LARGE MOBILE TRAILER to be my mobile workshop. I wonder which would best regarding fumes and general maintenance. Onan approx. 7000w is my preffered choice at this point.: One that runs on propane will be the best as far as pollution goes. Gas gives the more power, diesel would cost too much and of course, pollutes the most. You need to calculate the total wattage you'll be using and buy a generator rated for it. Note that on most generators the advertised wattage is serge wattage and the sustainable wattage is less.

Q:I know a train runs on an electric engine powered by a diesel generator. Would something like this be feasible for cars?: You still have the inefficiency of the gasoline fueled engine. Gas cars break down like this: 1/3 of the energy goes out the radiator as waste heat 1/3 of the energy goes out the exhaust pipe as waste heat 1/3 of the energy actually turns the crank shaft Now subtract from that final third the power to turn the water pump, oil pump, alternator, power steering pump and air conditioning. Then loose some more energy through friction losses in the drive train. If the car has an Automatic Transmission (A/T) add a little bit more loss to turn the fluid pump and the energy loss in the torque converter while the car is stopped. That constant push you feel while the A/T is in gear is lost energy exiting in the form of heat in the transmission fluid. That's why A/T have oil coolers. So only 20% to 25% of the total energy in that gallon of gas actually goes to pushing the car forward. I've seen reports that it is as low as 15%. See the waste?

Q:also is it probability that will damage my computer or UPS: Depending on where you live, your main power may occasionally be supplied by a large diesel generator. During power outages I use a 5500 watt generator to supply power to my home. The computer is on backup power and I have never had a problem. There is absolutely no reason for concern if you have a good quality generator that works properly. If your generator supplies a stable output voltage it will work fine. However if your generator operates near it maximum load and the output voltage varies in frequency and voltage there is a possibility of damage to equipment connected. A UPS may assist, but unless the generator is perfect the UPS will switch to battery power. After a short time the battery will run down and the computer shut off.

Thanks.: As most of the answers' say. A diesel / alternator set would be the best solution. The diesel engine must have a turbo charger to allow the engine to operate successfully at that altitude. However, I doubt that the engine would need to be rated at 30kW it may need to be somewhere around 15-20kW to drive the alternator into a standing load of 10kW. Generally I size the alternator at 1.25 of the standing load, so the alternator would need to be around 15kVA, provided the power factor is around .8. You will need to have an electrical engineer to check your load factor and determine what P.F. can be expected. If your load has several variable frequency or DC drives, this could cause a low PF. Therefore the kVA rating of the alternator would be higher. Also at the altitude, cooling of the alternator could be a problem due to the thin air. The generator manufacturer may be able to provide an oversized fan assembly to compensate for this. Best of luck, your quest is very interesting. Most simple common use welder runs on low voltage high current AC to weld steel, except plasma welder that requires very high voltage DC. Of course, portable welder runs on battery power high current DC where AC power source is not available.
