and what makes a band not metal. I'm not really a metalhead. I like more hard rock and punk but I hang out with metalheads and they seem to hate this kid because he listens to Avenged Sevenfold, Slipknot, Disturbed, Bullet for my Valentine, etc. He says he's a metalhead and thinks of Slipknot as a a death metal band which all my friends don't even consider Slipknot metal.What makes a band metal? Is it the loud distorted wall of sound, evil sounding riffs, or fast machine gun drumming? nu metal is a genre as in korn, disturbed, and system of a down. it is not applied to any new metal band. EDIT: the metal community is very traditional but i'd argue it progresses more then any other genre and has more variations.

I decided to listen to heavy metal today; not sure what band, I just typed heavy metal into Pandora. To me, the music sounded like someone was putting metal into a blender. The lyrics sounded exactly like the sound that a Hog makes when it is being slaughtered. Does all heavy metal sound this bad?

Mudvayne... not metal... Anyways, in actuality most of the metal scene is located either in the death or black scene so the majority are undecipherable to people who don't listen to metal. If you actually listened to metal almost all vocals can be understood. You should stick to the hard rock ish stuff, since metal is not what your looking for. listen to other numetal bandsl ike Godsmack, Spineshank, Disturbed... cause most metal bands are hard to understand to the untrained ear.

Well, each metal has its own unique density. So if you know the density of the unknown metal, you could match it up a metal with the same density as the one you calculated of the unknown metal. I hope this helps.
