- Q: I have a converted loft which is really cold. The roof doesn't have any insulation, just a waterproof sheet, but i don't want to spend too much insulating it with the proper boards. If i use mineral wool and staple it across the roof trusses will it do a good job?
- Yes, be sure to leave an air space between the top of the insulation and the roof deck to allow for ventilation, and use a vapor barrier on the interior side of the insulation.

- Steel spreaders may be cheapest (as described in other answer) but many roofs have shingle nails sticking out,a couple dabs of caulking,glue,you're done! Be sure anything you use is compatible with your foam,some will just MELT it. Good Luck! DrJ

- Spray on expanding foam is best, paint on radiant barrier may work, blow in insulation in attic (cellulose or fiberglass) or put 12"x12" Styrofoam ceiling tiles on the ceiling, they look decent and not to expensive, installs with latex adhesive or staples. Good luck

- Anytime snow melts from a roof due to lost heat from the interior, or sun shining on the roof, but air is below freezing, icecycles will form. The real danger here is ice cycles that can fall when thawing and kill in extreme cases, AND ice dams can form forcing ice back up under shingles damaging roof. That is why it is often a good idea to install heat tape under the edge of roofs in areas that are prone to heavy freezes and snow.

- I'm assuming your talking about a ridge cap normally you would seal it in with tar or polyurethane caulk and put your shingles over it

- that is being done now and is called solar heat where dark panels are installed on a roof and the collected heat is drawn into the home via a liquid medium. The alternative of which you speak: between the insullation and roof ,,is just not practical to build. nor would it provide a greater heat than the aforementioned.

- Most attics are vented, so I'm not sure how effective that would be.
- Q: What is the difference between roof and loft insulations?
- Potentially that the roof itself is insulated on the underside. A loft insulation could be that the base or floor of the loft/ attic is insulated. Otherwise, I'm not sure.
