Q:solar panels disconnected from battery?
Know that solar panels almost always incorporate a blocking diode to prevent a battery from back-feeding through an un-illuminated panel. Know that solar panels are usually connected to a battery via an electronic switching charge controller, not directly connected. Know that when a solar panel is open-circuited (disconnected from everything) it's terminal voltage will rise to almost twice it's nominal voltage. (22V is common for a 2V panel), unless it is stored in total darkness.
Q:Solar panel for macbook?
Well that's a good idea,,,here's what ya need..First you need an array that will overcome the drain effect created by the in use or sleeping laptop...that is best solved by averaging out the real use of the machine in terms of watt/minutes...If you check your transformer you'll see it has a capacity which you have cited however the true use of the computer is about 40-50 percent of that in watt/minutes..but only while your using it and when in the sleep mode the watt/minute value drops even more to about 5%.... So if your actual use consists of 2 hours of use per day at 50% and 2 hours at 5% percent the actual wattage draw is only averaged out at 34watts/minute. optimally your panel should supply all your power from its photovoltaic conversion ,but in the real world application the panel only recharges ,over a period of time, the used power. So if you had a 5 watt (@ 2vdc) panel working 480 minutes and used up 35 x2=700 and 9 x2=8 for a total of 78 watts you would have 5 x 480 = 7200 watts input and a parasitic load of 78 watts in the two hours...well within the recharge state required.. For a little safety I would permanently wire a cigarette lighter type plug to the end of the panel this will keep the polarity correct and serve as a quick disconnet means...Also add a fuse at .5 amp... a good place to get these are on the internet....some are very expensive some a very cheap --go for a middle of the roader...Have a good one from the E...

30 years ago when the Hippies shut down our clean Nuclear plants They promised a clean miracle. No such thing! I'm sad to say at best Solar will only provide a fraction of our energy needs. (I guess if one abuses enough drugs they'll think up anything?) I am an apprentice for a Electric foreman; we calculate $50,000.00 in panels will meet the needs of a k foot house. So you would need a hundred grand. You'd save 00 dollers a month in electricity, but you'd be paying ,000 a month to pay off your loan of 00,000.00 in panels. God Bless You indeed a nice thought if it was practical.

Q:should i get a solar panel?
It depends mainly on where you live - both politically and geographically. It's very worthwhile if you live in the Southern hemisphere and your house faces north. The same holds true if you live in the Northern hemisphere in a south-facing dwelling. If your government gives a generous rebate towards your purchase of the panels (as the Australian one does) then ,yes, it is worthwhile as you can make your money back in only a few years. Of course if your motivation is more an ecologic than economic one then go ahead and do it.

I take it you are in the uk,no grants available that I know of .Affordability is down to how wealthy you are,cost effectiveness? you may!!!recover the cost over about 20 to 30 years depending on your power use,against what you would pay a power Co. Worth while? frankly just another scheme to prise money out of the public,in the name of ecology or cost saving.
Q:Solar panel charging question?
Most solar panels have something called a charge controller on them. This prevents electricity from going backwards from the battery to the panel. Solar panels are rated at 2V but they do put out a little more than that during full sun operation. You didn't specify the size of your battery but it really doesn't matter. It comes down to your consumption of power. If you are only charging the RV battery so it maintains a charge when you don't use it very much, a 5 watt panel is fine. It will charge the battery and keep the small drains on the battery from making it go dead ( the clock radio, the theft deterrent system, etc use power even when RV is off) But if you are using the battery to run things when you are parked, you probably don't have a big enough panel. If you use a 30watt fluorescent light and a 00 watt laptop, you need 30 watts of power saved up every hour in your battery and that's with no inefficiencies. So if your panel puts out 5 watts an hour and you are using 30 watts an hour, you need 30 watts/ 5 watts = 9 hours minimum of charge time to run your stuff for just one hour. You probably need a panel of around a 00 watts to get any meaningful use of your battery. Plus, you never want to run your battery to full drain because it ruins the plates inside the battery. Watts = volts x amps. If you have 2 volts panels, you would charge at 8 amps with a 00 watt panel. This is a good charge rate. Any more than this and you risk warping the plates with too much heat.
