- Q: Ok Im trying to power my room using solar panels and I've figure out that I need about 700 watts to do so, but I really only use my electronics at night. I was wondering if I could buy lets say a 200 watt solar panel and let it charge a battery all day would that work? - Solar panels range fromwatt to 200 watts. Most panels up to30 watts are 2volts. Siemens puts out a module (SM0) that is rated at 0 watts, 2volt, and 6.3 amps.weight (without a frame) .5 kg ms 660mm by 36mm., .868 sq meters, 26.73 watts/m^2. Do a google search for solar panels. Southern Cal. should have lots of suppliers. I know there is one in Arizona.
- Q: Can I add more solar panel let say up to 200 watt and adding two 2 volts battery using the same charges controller and power inverter?
- You can wire solar panels in parallel (i.e. positive to positive, negative to negative). Preferably, the panels should be similar to allow the output voltages to track. Otherwise, it may be necessary to include diodes in series with each panel so voltage variations do not have an adverse effect. The other alternative is to have the panels charging individual batteries and then combining the batteries through diodes before using the inverter. This approach would require separate charge controllers for each battery. Not quite as energy efficient as each diode causes a voltage drop (and so a power loss).
- Q: I'm doing a project for school and I'm a little confused about energy and solar panels. I'm looking to propose installation of solar panels to power the computer lab at my school. - The rating of a solar panel is a maximum continuous rating. A 200 Watt panel will give a maximum of 200 watts under ideal conditions. A computer and monitor use about 400 Watts. not per hour - watts is Volts * Amps and a measure of Power. In hour a computer and monitor uses 400 Watt hours (Wh). Wh is a measure of Energy. To power a lab of 0 computers you will need 0* 400 = 4000 Watts. To run this from solar panels through the day only you would need a 4000 Watt panel. Except - its cloudy, the sun is in the wrong place - many factors reduce the output. To be reasonably safe you would need about a 2000 Watt panel. Then you would need batteries to store power through dull periods AND a voltage converter to change from low voltage DC from the solar panels to the mains voltage for your computers.

- Hey David, yes, we have built plenty of them. If you are into the do it yourself world, the easiest type to build is the Batch Preheater type. What you need is an old water heater, something small, like an under counter model, 0 to 30 gallons in size. It has to be one that hasn't rusted out yet and started leaking. We stopped at a local plumbing place in town, they are always throwing out units they have removed from homes because the new owner wants a larger unit, or gas versus electric, and so on. He sold us a pretty recent model for $0. Take the water heater home, and strip off the outer metal housing and all the insualtion so all you have left is the tank. Clean it up, and paint it with black paint. Now build a wood enclosure, something the size of a dog house that your tank will fit inside of. Use a glass panel for one side of the roof. What works best is an old window pane someone is throwing out that is about the right size, then build your dog house to fit it. When it's done, put some styrofoam insulation panels around the back and side walls to keep the heat in when the sun shines on it, then mount your tank inside. Put your dog house someplace in the sun, run the cold water that normally feeds into your water heater into the tank (in the cold inlet side), then run a pipe from the outlet of the tank to your regular water heater. We have one just like this installed in the northern midwest, it works great about 7 months of the year. Usually in the summer if it's about 75 degrees outside, the water comes into the house at around 00 degrees, then the regular water heater only needs to add another 25 degrees to the water to finish it off. Since the water starts out at about 56 degrees, the solar preheater ends up doing about 65% of the work. In the winter, we simply drain the tank and lines to and from it, and route the cold water directly to the regular water heater. There are some designs on line, try googling, Batch Water Preheater.
