- Q: My ceramics teacher taught us how to make slip by using dry clay + water, but atm i don‘t have dry clay . so i was wondering if anyone knows how to make slip another way? or an easy way to dry out clay quickly :) I don‘t know what kind of clay i‘m using (I‘m a newbie) but it seems standard clay
- There isnt know other way. But if you do have clay it can be any consistancy just not fired.like put in the kilm. Just put clay in a bowl, add water and mix really good ha. :)
- Q: Is electric clippers or ceramic knives good or alloy knives?
- The ceramic cutter of the electric shear is better.Because of the hardness of steel is Vivtorinox HV700, ceramic knife hardness is HV1100, the higher the hardness of sharp.
- Q: I‘m a history major, just looking to add one more class that fits into my awkward schedule. One of the few I can choose from is history of ceramics for an elective credit. Has anyone taken this type of class and able to offer an idea of what exactly it might include? I‘m considering it, but don‘t know if it will be worth it.
- Taught ceramics over 25 years. the start course is designed so all of us could have fulfillment on their very own point. to whether you will like it, that relies upon on you and your attempt. have relaxing, that's the objective.
- Q: I am very worried about the tile. It seems that in every restraunt, friends house, or anyplace with ceramic tile, it has this shiny gloss to it and never stains. Is this just the tile? Because the grout in my kitchen and bathroom has stained in a couple of places. But at these other places, ie restraunt bathrooms, I have looked and there is no staining at all. Im also scared to mop the floor and end up staining the grout (I have been here a year and have never mopped). Help!! What do I do, and if i need sealer, how do I put it on??? Thanks!!!!
- soi take it that you want to seal the grout, not the ceramic tile. they're two completely different things. you can seal a grout by using any sealers that can seal porous materials. that'll keep most of the things from staining it. You will, however, have many choices of sealants. Most are topical, which is like putting a thin layer of wax on the surface to repel liquids and oils. This works ok for the most part but in time it will fade and you will have to reseal every year or two. It also will not protect your surface for a very long time. Within about ten to twenty minutes, the liquid or oil will saturate your stone. The alternative is a fluorocarbon based sealants that will chemically change your grout/stone to make the surface tension of the stone/surface less than water, repelling water more effectively. You also do not need to reseal after a year or two because it's not topical. The only sensitivity is with UV/sunlight. The downside of these sealants is that it does not repel oil very well. If it's for bathrooms, you should be ok, unless you decide to take a bottle of crisco and cook something in the bathroom. Whatever you do, make sure you wipe the surface clean after a spill, as soon as you can, and also that when you seal your surface, you give it a good 2nd or even 3rd coat to seal it well.
- Q: I was thinking about painting plates as a birthday party activity (but at home, not at a pottery studio like Color Me Mine.) I‘ve been looking at ceramic bisque online, but I was wondering if you could just paint on a white ceramic dinner plate or is ceramic bisque different than a finished plate. Also, do the plates need to be fired to be food safe or is there another way to do it? I read something about using underglaze and a clear overglaze on top of it, but does that still need to be fired or does the overglaze protect you from the underglaze? If it‘s too much trouble, maybe we‘ll just paint something that isn‘t used for food, but I still want to make sure it‘s non-toxic. Also, any ideas of the cost of firing ceramics? Where is the best place to do this?
- Billy Squire - everybody wants you?
- Q: Want to buy some wine wine, bubble drugs do just do not know is good or ceramic glass?? What about regular wine, good glass or good ceramics?
- Ceramic is good. To put the more the better use of ceramic wine glass wine will only put more worse. The wine glass heated wine would evaporate outward. Water not wine.
- Q: I‘m thinking about broadening my field of expertise(I paint murals) to include painted backsplashes for kitchens and elsewhere. I bought a book on how to lay ceramic tile, I just need to know if there‘s anyone out there with experience in this, and how they felt about it, any ideas?
- I've painted ceramic tiles (to use as coasters), with great success using glossies paint. Just apply it to a clean tile, and then bake it in your oven at the specified temperature time. The end result is a washable, highly usable surface. Mine are now going on 7 years old, and look the same as the day I first painted them. They get constant use, too, which says a lot for the quality of the paint :) Another idea: You can purchase bisqued (fired) tiles at your local clay supplier. With these, apply underglazes (which you paint on like you would oils or acrylics--paint a picture or design, essentially) and then fire. Once the underglazes are fired, coat them with some clear glaze, fire again, and you have your finished work. These would be great for backsplashes. If you want to create a truly custom backsplash, though, you probably want to consider making your own tiles (who says they have to be square??). If you don't have the equipment (it can get pretty costly with a slab roller, kiln, tools, glazes, etc), you should seriously consider taking a class at your local community college or university. If you haven't worked with clay before, it will be good for you to learn the qualities of the medium; the importance of drying times, the advantages of using a particular type of clay, glaze interactions, etc. Good luck! You have a great idea for broadening your horizons!!! :)
- Q: i have dull floor and i want to know what i can use to make it shine and look glossy i have ceramin tile in the kitchen hallway and bathroom so please help me and thank you!
- I just tried CASCADE. My matte ceramic floor gets grungy looking from my cat's body oil and general foot guck. I filled the sink 1/3 with hot sink water (distilled or de-mineralize water is better, I use that only on my hardwood floors), then I added a kettle full of hot water in the sink also. Into it I put 2 teaspoons of Cascade and mixed. Heck if it gets your dishes sparkly, why not the tile?! It cleaned the floor that plain hot water wouldn't (I never use dishwashing soap or Bona or such because they still leave a film). The streaks and messysness are gone and now that it's dry, it has left the tiles with a little shine. After the floor dried, I did a couple of spots where I missed the first time with my mop. I used a cotton blue/white mop for the floor and rubber gloves for the semi-hot water. I haven't tried a sponge mop. I have a squeezable sponge mop but I use it only on my hardwood floors, damp with warm water only, nothing else including hardwood floor cleaners seems to work. My hardwood floor is new with a poly coating but it dulls if I use cleaners. The tile floor is now dry with a good little shine.
