- Q: Hi, I was wondering if the house appraisal for a house with all hardwood floor was higher than it is if the house has all tile. Thanks!
- REAL harwood floors (meaning the flooring is 100% hardwood and not a laminate of any kind) usually appraise SLIGHTLY higher. This means the floors are in great shape with no re-finishing needed.etc needed. It also means they are flat (not warped) or dinged and stain free. As with tile wood floors come in all price ranges. Laminates (like babmboo or pergo) won't be valued as highly as 100% hardwood planks. Tile floors are 'iffy'. Just like harwood there are all different grades of tile. Cheap tiles -ceramic,terra cotta- do not appraise as highly as porcelain, stone or marble flooring. But even with the best of the best of either the appraisal value would change only a few 100 dollars between the best quality and the worst quailty of either.Hope this was helpful
- Q: bought home, tiles loose in shower, wonder if water damage is behind it
- Tiles originally went on with an adhesive mortar and then grout. I suspect the grout fell out, and water softened the mortar and the tile fell off. Take the tile off and clean any loose mortar from behind it. Don't use the shower for a couple of days and let the area dry thoroughly. Buy some silicone adhesive that is not water soluble and re-stick the tile to the wall. Once it has been in place for 20 minutes, re-re-grout the tiles using a latex grout. Let it all dry a couple of more days and you are good to go.
- Q: We are laying 18 x 18 porcelain tiles in our kitchen for an open house we‘re having in 6 days. We can‘t figure out when and how to tile under the refrigerator. Do we have to move the refrigerator into another room? Can we wait two days for the mortar and grout to set firm and move the refrigerator onto the newly installed tile so we can lay tile where refrigerator will go? If we do that, should we then wait 24 hours for that tile to set so we can move the refrigerator back into place? What is the best way to handle the installation? I would appreciate any thoughts on how this is most ideally done.
- Well, please take my advice as I used to work at a popular Australian tile franchise. Number one - make sure the porcelain you are laying is pre-sealed, as porcelain is a natural stone and is 'porous', so harsh staining can will occur if they are not sealed. If they are just 'Glazed Porcelain' tiles, they don't need to be 'sealed' as they are on a ceramic biscuit and just have a glazed protective coating, which are quite 'hardwearing'. In which they are 'ceramic'. Number two - YES!! you must fully take out all fixtures to lay in the bathroom and kitchen, tiles will almost usually be there many years more than a vanity or a fridge. If you replace your kitchen cabinetry, well all floor space should be tiled. Many people run into problems of the 'previous owner' not doing the job properly, and down the track they wan't the same tile.....well the life of a tile is around 4 years then they become extinct., even if you can get the same tile, it will not be of the same batch/shade. Trying to fix up half-hearted jobs isn't as easy as some people think!!! So please tile ALL floor area and order enough so you have a couple of spare boxes left over, for future repairs. Because you will never get that same tile batch/shade ever again!! You'll also make it easier for the next person who lives there. Also, if you find out that if it is true polished porcelain and there not pre-sealed, buy a 'reputable' tile sealer and seal them before laying. As when you grout the tile (if there not sealed) you will create a grout haze around all your joints and will be a nightmare to remove and your lovely porcelain won't look so 'lovely'!! HAVE FUN......

- Q: I have three ceramic tiles that need a special curved cut. I‘m just looking for some place where I can take the tiles in and they cut them for me onsite and I walk out with my cut tiles. Home Depot doesn‘t offer this service. Who does? I live in Atlanta.
- Cutting Tile In Place
- Q: Am I able to Lay down Ceramic/Porcelain Tiles directly on top of vinyl tiles. If So are there special material that I need to use.Even though the floor is in the basement, it seems that the vinyl is laid over wood, rather than concerete. Thanks for your answer.
- The best idea would be to take the time to remove the vinyl tiles. Otherwise the tiles are going to uneven. Pulling up the vinyl tiles shouldn't be too much work and you will be happier with the results in the end.
- Q: I don‘t have a ton of money for my kitchen but I feel I can do some minor things. I) Orange countertop MUST go. I am seriously considering due the lack of counter space in the kitchen, what you see is my only countertop space, is move the fridge to the wall on the right, which you cant realy see in this pic, but there is an inside interior wall im going to set the fridge against, and then extend the countertop the wall, and put a base cabinet below it, and one above it to be the same size vertically as the one next to the fridge. A neutral beige-ish countertop, and then probably a range top thing for above the stove. Replace old sink faucet too.My question about making a tile backsplash for above the sink, would ie be more logical to measure it out, and put the tiles on a piece of plywood and screw that 2 the wall instead of grouting the wall and tiles affixed to the wall directly.
- tiling directly to plywood is not recommended for 2 reasons. the first is that specific products must be used to guarantee its adhesion to the surface and the second is that you would have the thickness of the plywood showing at the edges. it would look odd and incomplete. just pick some tile you like from lowes, home depot or you local tile distributor (which offers better quality tile than home depot or lowes, and usually at just as comparable prices) and adhere them to the wall with either mastic or thinset. mastic should only be used for ceramic tiles under 6 inches and not for glass tiles or marble. your best bet is just to buy thinset. ultraflex II from lowes is a good product. a tumbled marble on a diagonal with stone accent pieces placed throughout would look nice and not break the bank, since your backsplash space isn't more than 15 square feet. mosaic tiles would look nice as well and wouldn't be too costly. the great thing about such a small backsplash space is that you can splurge on the tiles that range from $3-$10 a foot if you want. a 4x4 or 6x6 ceramic tile in your preferred color would look nice on a brick pattern if you aren't into the tumbled marble. i'm including some links to some backsplash pictures. the 1st couple are specifically tumbled marbled designs and the last couple are just other different options. good luck!
- Q: I bought tile effect laminate flooring for my kitchen. How do I stagger the joints, but line the grout seems up at the same time? There are four equal tiles per a plank.
- The tiles should be the same size or in a pattern such that you can off set the joints and still have the tilegrout lines still line up. Or some of them you can both off set the joints and do a offset or brick pattern in the laminate itself. This type of laminate you ll need more than normal scrap because you will scrap more out on this type of laminate. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar, I ve attended several installation seminars as well as installed a few 100,000 s/f.. GL
- Q: Kitchen tiles, that are like whitish/beigish?
- kitchen tiles, no. If you want a palace look, you would need to use very large tiles because if you think about a palace, they are large and grand, the tiles would have to be a couple feet big each, probably special order, unless its on the first floor and you can do a cement floor and make it look like tiles and stain it.
- Q: currently have vinyl tile glued to concrete on grade. Want to install bamboo floor / engineered wood. Can we go on top of existing vinyl?
- Possibly. The vinyl tile must be well installed (not coming loose or bubbling or open seams, etc.). If the vinyl tile is a no wax or smooth surface, it may still need to be prepped with a palm sander and 80 grit just enough to give it some tooth. And finally, make certain to contact both manufacturers' reps or technical services to make certain that the new glue is compatible with both the vinyl and the bamboo... and to make certain that this endeavor will not void your warranty. Good luck.
